A group of dermatologists detected the smallest skin cancer ever found in a woman. Even with normal vision, seeing the little red spot was difficult. The Oregon Health and Science University team was also given the “Smallest Detected Skin Cancer” Guinness World Record.
Minor skin cancer in the world was found under a woman’s eye by a team of dermatologists from the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) after she expressed concern about a little, innocuous red spot on her face.
The difficult-to-see spot under her eye on her face was 0.65 millimeters, or 0.025 inches, in size. The skin specialists found the microscopic tumor using cutting-edge non-invasive equipment, even though it was almost invisible to the human eye.
Christy Staats was concerned about the growth despite having numerous experts inspecting her little skin lesion behind her eye. The OHSU School of Medicine assistant professor of dermatology, Dr. Alexander Witkowski, finally granted her an appointment.
Fortunately, nothing was discovered while she looked, but Dr. Witkowski was interested in another tiny, barely noticeable location. The dermatologist was suspicious of the lesion and utilized advanced non-evasive equipment to establish that it was a melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.
The earliest skin cancer diagnosis awarded Dr. Witkowski and his OHSU team the Guinness World Record for the “Smallest Detected Skin Cancer.” A Guinness World Records judge visited OHSU on May 1 to present certificates for each team member’s newly attained record.

Guinness World Records recognized the doctor’s team for their work in early cancer diagnosis by awarding them for finding the “Smallest Detected Skin Cancer.” The Guinness World Records judge paid a visit to the OSHU to congratulate the team and provide each member with a certificate for the record.
