Eris Variant of Covid-19: Limited Risk of Resurfacing Global Pandemic in India, Experts Say

The emergence of a new Covid-19 sub-variant, Eris, in the United Kingdom has raised concerns among neighboring countries about the potential resurgence of the global pandemic. Despite fears that this variant could spread to India and trigger another wave of infections, experts have reassured that the likelihood of it affecting the Indian population is low.

Recent reports indicate that Covid cases have been on the rise in various countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan, primarily due to the fast-spreading Eris variant. However, as of now, this variant has not reached India.

Experts have stated that the risk of Eris causing a new wave of the pandemic in India is minimal, mainly because a significant portion of the population has already attained herd immunity, especially against the weaker XBB sub-lineage of the virus. Consequently, the spread of the Eris variant is expected to be limited, and there is no immediate cause for alarm.

Although the situation seems relatively under control, experts advise that everyone should continue adhering to proper Covid guidelines while in public places to prevent infection. These precautions remain essential even as the UK Health Security Agency reports a notable increase in Covid cases attributed to the Eris variant within the United Kingdom.
