US CDC: New COVID-19 variant BA.2.86 more infectious could cause infection in vaccinated individuals

Concerns have been raised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States regarding the coronavirus’s recently discovered BA.2.86 lineage. The CDC claims that this variation may be more likely to infect people who have already had COVID-19 or had the vaccine against it.

Although the CDC has acknowledged the potential for greater infectiousness, whether this variety causes a more severe illness than prior strains is unknown. The widespread mutations found within the BA.2.86 lineage are the primary source of worry. According to Reuters, these changes doubt the efficacy of immunity built up through vaccinations or earlier infections.

The existence of 36 mutations that distinguish the BA.2.86 lineage from the currently dominant XBB.1.5 variation is one key feature attracting researchers’ attention. The CDC emphasizes that, at this point, the restricted availability of viral samples makes it difficult to do comprehensive laboratory testing of antibodies.

The highly altered BA.2.86 lineage, found in various nations, including the United States, Denmark, and Israel, is being monitored by the CDC, as previously revealed.

The CDC has stated that it is unlikely to link the current increase in hospitalizations in the United States to the BA.2.86 lineage. Health authorities worldwide will closely monitor the behavior and effects of this newly discovered variety as research and monitoring continue.

The ‘Eris’ Subvariant of EG.5

The EG.5 ‘Eris’ subvariant, a progenitor of the Omicron lineage that first manifested in November 2021, has been widely blamed for the recent upsurge in COVID-19 cases across the US, Europe, and Asia. According to the most recent estimates from the US CDC, this subvariant current accounts for roughly 17 percent of new COVID-19 cases in the country, somewhat outpacing the 16 percent attributable to the next most prevalent lineage, XBB.1.16.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), EG.5 is a “variant of interest,” which necessitates more thorough surveillance.
