A new variant of chickenpox-causing virus was found last week in India: symptoms and prevention

New variant of chickenpox-causing virus – The varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which causes chickenpox, is now known to exist in India for the first time, according to the National Institute of Virology (NIV). A clade is a genotype, subtype, or group that shares an ancestor.

NIV scientist Dr Pragya Yadav, one of the study’s authors, said, “The Clade 9 is the most common VZV strain in circulation in countries like Germany, the UK, and the US. However, this is the first study reporting the circulation of VZV Clade 9 in India.”

What is the varicella-zoster virus?

Infection with the varicella-zoster virus can result in chickenpox and shingles in adults, children, and adolescents. It is one of the nine herpes viruses that can infect people.

In this recent study, researchers discovered that of the 331 probable VZV patients, 28 had vesicular rashes and tested positive for the virus. Their analyses verified the widespread use of Clades 1, 5, and 9 in India. Clade 1 and 5 had previously been found in the nation, but the analysis revealed that Clade 9 had never been found there before.

When to concern?

She stated, “Despite discovering the VZV Clade 9 variant in India, there were no conclusive signs that the patient’s disease severity had increased. We discovered the novel clade because of the intensified surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic. On September 6, the research was released in “Annals of Medicine.”

Observable symptoms

Clade 9 symptoms, according to medical professionals, include rash, fever, loss of appetite, headache, weariness, and a general feeling of being unwell.

Typically, the chickenpox rash occurs two to three weeks after virus exposure. Papules, which are bumps, are the outward representation of the rash. The patient may also have fever, body aches, and headaches once the rash appears. The complete procedure takes place over the course of two weeks. The patient remains contagious until a scab forms.

Prevention Tips

Even though the country is not in a panic, it is still critical to know how to avoid becoming infected in the first place. Getting vaccinated is the best method to prevent chickenpox. For any required vaccines, consult your doctor.

To lower your risk of contracting the virus:

  1. Follow other prevention advice, such as maintaining basic hygiene.
  2. Use soap and water to wash your hands routinely throughout the day.
  3. After coughing or sneezing, or if something around appears sick, wash your hands thoroughly to remove viruses that could cause an infection.
  4. Keep your distance from anyone who has chickenpox or shingles.
