Following a period of tumultuous changes in OpenAI’s leadership, the artificial intelligence company has now made its latest ChatGPT voice feature accessible to all users, including those who opt for the free subscription.
While OpenAI initially introduced the voice and images features in ChatGPT in September, they were initially limited to Plus and Enterprise users. However, in a recent update, OpenAI has extended access to the ChatGPT voice feature to all users, regardless of whether they have a paid ChatGPT Plus subscription. This means that even free users can now enjoy engaging in comprehensive conversations with the ChatGPT chatbot.
OpenAI took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the news, stating, “ChatGPT with voice is now available to all free users. Download the app on your phone and tap the headphones icon to start a conversation.”
According to OpenAI, the ChatGPT voice feature allows the platform to interact with users using five distinct voices: Juniper, Sky, Breeze, Ember, and Cove. Users can select these voices based on their preferences, providing a more human-like and conversational experience compared to conventional voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa.
The enhanced voice capabilities in ChatGPT are powered by a new text-to-speech engine developed by OpenAI, which claims to generate human-like audio from mere text and a brief sample of speech.
OpenAI’s decision to extend the ‘Chat with Voice’ feature to free users is aimed at making the interactive functionalities more widely accessible. This move is intended to encourage increased engagement and usage of the new tool among a broader user base.
