PM Modi on deepfakes at G20 meeting: “AI must be safe for society

In the virtual G20 meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised worries about the misuse of AI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi supported calls for international rules on artificial intelligence while reiterating his concerns about deepfakes, which produce incredibly lifelike pictures.

During the inaugural speech of the G20 virtual summit, which India is hosting as president, Prime Minister Modi stated, “The world is worried about the negative effects of AI.” India believes that international AI legislation needs to be developed together. We must proceed now that we are aware of the risks deepfakes pose to individuals and society. We want AI to become widely available, but it also needs to be socially safe.

Following the successful 18th G20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi on September 9 and 10, the virtual G20 Summit is being held under the direction of India. The G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration was unanimously adopted as a consequence of the summit.

In the concluding session, Prime Minister Modi suggested a virtual meeting to review the progress at the end of India’s G20 leadership.

Crucial points from PM Modi’s speech about AI and deepfakes:

  • PM Modi stated, “We must recognize the risks deepfakes pose to society and individuals.”
  • PM Modi addressed the G20 leaders, saying, “India’s thinking is clear—we have to work together on global regulation of AI.”
  • At the G20 virtual conference, Prime Minister Modi stated, “There are growing concerns on negative use of AI worldwide.”
  • PM Modi continued, “Artificial intelligence (AI) should reach people and must be safe for society.”

PM Modi remarked, “We welcome the news of the release of hostages,” following the release of fifty hostages held in Gaza. We’re hoping for the quick release of every hostage.

The six-week conflict has paused for the first time since the Israeli cabinet declared a temporary ceasefire with Hamas. The goal of the ceasefire is to make it easier for the hostages that Hamas took during its onslaught on southern Israel on October 7. The accord also calls for an increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza and the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
