Google’s Gemini launch delayed until January, according to a report

At I/O 2023, Google unveiled Gemini as their next-generation foundation model. A report from today claims that Google had planned to launch Gemini the following week, but that has been pushed back until January.

According to the Information, a series of events in California, New York, and Washington, targeted at lawmakers and officials, are scheduled to coincide with the major reveal of Gemini next week.

Following Google’s discovery that “the AI didn’t reliably handle some non-English queries,” Sundar Pichai postponed the launch. Google’s primary goal is to meet or exceed OpenAI’s GPT-4 in global language support. The corporation has reportedly “met that standard in some respects,” according to sources in today’s story.

The firm is “focused on getting Gemini 1.0 out as soon as possible, making sure it’s competitive and state of the art, and we’ll build from there on,” according to the CEO’s November statement. Google is reportedly still “finalizing the primary, biggest version of Gemini” at this time.

Gemini was “seeing impressive multimodal capabilities not seen in prior models,” according to a Google statement during I/O. In addition to comprehending text and graphics, the business also wants to be “highly efficient at tool and API integrations” as part of its efforts to make Gemini a desirable product for outside developers of different sizes (PaLM 2 has four, including the lightweight “Gecko” for mobile). Ultimately, Gemini is designed to “enable future innovations, like memory and planning,” according to Google.

A major question is how quickly Gemini will be included in Google services such as Bard, Search, and Workspace.
