Bringing DeepMind and Research together, along with Android and Hardware, is Google’s latest AI push

Google announced plans to combine the AI model development teams from its Research and DeepMind divisions.

Alphabet-owned Google has revealed a major internal reorganization that would boost its position in the IT sector and accelerate its artificial intelligence (AI) breakthroughs. The relocation entails the consolidation of multiple teams in charge of hardware, Android, and AI development.

Google announced plans to combine the teams working on AI model development at its Research and DeepMind divisions in a statement that was made public on Thursday. With this consolidation, research and real-world application teams will be able to collaborate more closely as AI development efforts are streamlined.

Moreover, Google will move its Responsible AI teams from Research to DeepMind Research. This change attempts to address worldwide concerns about AI ethics and regulation by ensuring that AI models are designed with safety considerations from the beginning.

The DeepMind team’s successful creation of Google’s cutting-edge AI model, Gemini, precedes the consolidation. The year-old Gemini boasts the ability to interpret many data forms, such as text, audio, and video. However, Google was criticized for prior image-generating errors, which led to a halt to some image-generation features.

Beyond artificial intelligence, Google has reorganized strategically, forming a new team named “Platforms and Devices” to manage Pixel products, Android, Chrome, ChromeOS, Photos, and other areas. Google’s reorganization demonstrates the company’s dedication to incorporating AI throughout its whole product line.

Formerly in charge of Google’s hardware division, Rick Osterloh will head the Platforms and Devices group, highlighting the critical role AI plays in determining user experiences. Osterloh, citing examples like Pixel’s camera technology, emphasizes the importance of integrating hardware, software, and AI for disruptive advances.

Accelerating product development cycles and streamlining procedures are further goals of the reorganization. Google aims to efficiently utilize the most recent AI models and research by uniting teams and leadership behind common objectives. This strategy fits in with Google’s larger plan to lead the way in AI innovation and adjust to changing technology domains.

Google emphasizes that the consolidation does not represent a shift in the firm’s dedication to the larger Android ecosystem, but it does highlight the growing emphasis the company is placing on integrating AI across all of its platforms.
