Google has announced a major update to its AI-powered search experience, AI Mode, making it available in five new languages: Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, and Brazilian Portuguese. According to Google, the expansion is powered by the company’s custom version of Gemini 2.5, a multimodal AI system with advanced reasoning capabilities. This ensures that AI Mode can understand the cultural and linguistic nuances of each supported language, making search results more accurate, natural, and useful for local users.
Smarter, More Contextual Search
With AI Mode, users can now search in Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, and Brazilian Portuguese using text, voice, or even images. For example, someone could:

- Ask for local dining recommendations with context-based suggestions
- Understand complex DIY tutorials in their native language
- Upload an image and ask nuanced follow-up questions
“With this expansion, more people can now use AI Mode to ask complex questions in their preferred language, while exploring the web more deeply,” said Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management at Google Search.
Evolving Beyond Search
AI Mode is currently accessible via a dedicated tab on the search results page or through a button in the search bar. While it is still optional, industry watchers suggest that Google may eventually make it the default search experience.
In addition to language expansion, Google has been experimenting with agentic features inside AI Mode. Last month, the company introduced the ability to book restaurant reservations directly within search. Future updates are expected to extend this functionality to local service appointments, event ticket bookings, and more, though these advanced features are currently available only to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US, priced at $249.99 per month.
