Fujitsu and Nvidia to Launch Energy-Efficient AI Chips for Japan’s Digital Future by 2030

Fujitsu

In a landmark collaboration set to redefine Japan’s technological landscape, Fujitsu and Nvidia have announced plans to jointly develop an energy-efficient artificial intelligence (AI) chip by 2030. The partnership aims to support Japan’s rapidly expanding data center, robotics, and technology sectors while positioning the country as a competitive player in the global AI race.

The upcoming AI chip will integrate Fujitsu’s powerful MONAKA CPU series with Nvidia’s high-performance GPUs, leveraging Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion technology to connect multiple chips and make them function as a single, ultra-efficient processor. This hybrid system promises high-speed computation while significantly reducing energy consumption, addressing one of the key challenges in modern AI infrastructure.

Building Japan’s Sovereign AI Ecosystem

This collaboration goes beyond simply developing a new chip—it is part of a broader vision to create Japan’s full-stack AI infrastructure. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized that the partnership is focused on “creating Japan’s AI infrastructure, from silicon to systems to AI models and software, designed with Japan for Japan’s industries and society.” Fujitsu CEO Takahito Tokita echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for “robust AI infrastructure with sufficient processing power and capabilities” to enable widespread adoption of AI in business and society.

The project builds on Japan’s flagship Fugaku supercomputer, developed by Fujitsu in partnership with the Riken research institute. FugakuNEXT, expected to launch around 2030, aims to deliver five to ten times the computing power of its predecessor, incorporating energy-efficient technologies now being adapted for commercial AI applications. By combining these advanced computing capabilities with AI agent platforms, the partnership will support autonomous learning systems, digital twins, and robotics-based automation across multiple sectors.

AI for Industry-Specific Applications

The Fujitsu-Nvidia collaboration will initially focus on sector-specific AI solutions for industries where Japan excels, including manufacturing, healthcare, and robotics. By integrating Fujitsu CPUs with Nvidia GPUs and deploying them as NVIDIA NIM microservices, organizations will gain access to scalable AI infrastructure while retaining control over data and technology usage.

Moreover, the partnership aims to enable physical AI, allowing autonomous machines to perceive, interpret, and act in real-world environments. Discussions are already underway with Japanese industrial robot maker Yaskawa Electric to implement these AI chips in robotics solutions, enhancing productivity and addressing labor shortages.

Global Implications and AI Competitiveness

This joint initiative also underscores Japan’s ambition to secure a foothold in the global AI race, which is currently dominated by U.S. and Chinese firms. By promoting the concept of sovereign AI, Fujitsu seeks to establish domestic AI systems—from infrastructure to data governance—ensuring Japan’s technological autonomy in critical industries.

The collaboration aligns with Nvidia’s broader strategy to expand AI computing capabilities worldwide. Last month, the company announced plans to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, adding substantial AI data center capacity and reinforcing its position as a leader in AI hardware and infrastructure.

Pioneering Next-Generation Computing

Together, Fujitsu and Nvidia are shaping a next-generation AI ecosystem that fuses hardware and software for unparalleled performance and energy efficiency. With applications ranging from autonomous industrial systems to enterprise AI solutions, this partnership is expected to accelerate AI adoption in Japan and beyond, setting a benchmark for energy-conscious, high-performance AI infrastructure worldwide.

By 2030, Fujitsu and Nvidia aim to provide Japan with the computational backbone necessary to support a digitally advanced, AI-driven society, positioning the country as a global leader in both innovation and sustainable technology.
