Researchers in the Netherlands reported that a 72-year-old man experienced a record 613 days of COVID-19 infection in one of their investigations. According to researchers, this was the “longest known” case of COVID-19 infection, as reported by TIME magazine. The patient died, according to the study, “from an underlying illness” after “incubating a highly mutated novel strain over 613 days.” He suffered from a blood condition and a compromised immune system.
In February 2022, the man contracted the COVID-19 virus or SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant. The paper also stated that before contracting the omicron variety, he had apparently failed to develop a robust immune response to several COVID vaccination injections.
Researchers at the Centre for Experimental and Molecular Medicine at the University of Amsterdam presented findings from a thorough examination of samples taken from more than two dozen throat and nose swabs. It determined that “the coronavirus developed resistance to sotrovimab — a COVID antibody treatment — within a few weeks.”Later, the virus underwent more than 50 modifications. According to reports, several of those alterations “suggested an enhanced ability to evade immune defenses.”
It was noted in the TIME article that no other people have been known to contract the mutant virus. But this case “illustrates how the pandemic virus can accumulate genetic alterations through extended infections, potentially giving rise to new variants of concern.” According to a remark from the authors, “This case highlights the risk of persistent SARS-CoV-2 infections in immunocompromised individuals.” They continued, “We emphasize the importance of continuing genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 evolution in immunocompromised individuals with persistent infections.”
