A look back at AI in 2023: A year of big stories

This year, artificial intelligence (AI) exploded from a cutting-edge technology to a pervasive presence in almost every facet of our lives. We all have it on our phones and operating systems and large companies have probably already begun integrating it into their daily operations.

But let’s be honest: we have yet to begin to scratch the surface of AI’s possibilities. Here are some of the significant stories in AI in 2023, from well-known chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot to picture generators like DALL-E and, of course, the accompanying regulatory difficulties.

The Association with India

India offers many unexplored AI applications in various exciting domains, including financial services, healthcare, agriculture, and many more.

Forbes anticipates that by 2025, AI spending in India will have climbed to about Rs 9,800 crore, and the technology will have generated at least Rs 3,750 crore in GDP.

Not only that but in June 2023, there were about 14 times as many AI-skilled individuals in India as there were in 2016. Artificial intelligence has already been widely adopted in several industries, notably retail, education, and banking.

The government has jumped on the AI chatbot bandwagon with projects under the Digital Nagrik programs, MyGov Helpdesk on WhatsApp, and Umang’s AI chatbot, among other things.

In the nation, there are already over 60 businesses aiming to provide services and solutions across several industrial verticals by utilizing the potential of generative artificial intelligence.

The ChatGPT year

Although ChatGPT wasn’t the first of its kind, it will be remembered as the chatbot that popularized artificial intelligence. The Natural Language chatbot developed by OpenAI gradually infiltrated workplaces, impacting output and causing concerns about job security.

Just two months after its inception, in January 2023, the chatbot surpassed 100 million users. It is one of the most popular services ever, with 1.7 billion website views in October 2023. The website has around 100 million active users per week. The website has a meager 17.33 percent bounce rate.

Forbes claims that ChatGPT is so well-known that 6 million searches for “ChatGPT login” occur monthly on Google. The most significant audience segments are India (6.32 percent), Japan (4.01 percent), and the United States (15.22 percent).

Substitutes for ChatGPT

ChatGPT faced many competitors this year, from Microsoft and Google investing heavily in new Generative search experiences to Google’s disastrous Bard launch.

China’s Baidu entered the fray with the Ernie bot, Meta’s open-sourced LLaMA2, and Mistral, a French chatbot.

Despite the early excitement, they proved to be a minor threat to ChatGPT. Aside from Google’s disastrous Bard launch, there was a lackluster reception to Microsoft and Google’s major push into Generative AI for web search.

Then there were the jokes: Google lost $100 billion in value because Bard produced an incorrect response; Microsoft’s ChatGPT-based Copilot declared its love for a journalist; and AI Doomerism, a meme.

AI issues and laws

The year 2023 revealed both the extent and limitations of our understanding of Generative AI, ranging from text-to-image generators producing unsettling and copyrighted visuals to AI-generated deepfakes potentially influencing elections.

In addition, sincere worries about AI taking jobs could create a conducive atmosphere for establishing laws and rules by the government.

The European Union passed the AI Act, which will go into force by 2025, while the US White House signed an executive order to improve AI safety. Additionally, the Digital India Act will include safeguards for AI.

Concerns about utilizing copyrighted content for AI training also led to litigation and legal disputes, and the UK Supreme Court issued a landmark decision declaring that patents cannot be issued for AI-based creations.

The University of Chicago researchers contributed to the creation of Nightsahde, a platform designed to shield artists from businesses that use their creations to train AI models.
