AGNIT Semiconductors Raises $2.6M to Scale Gallium Nitride Chips for Telecom and Defense

AGNIT Semiconductors

Bengaluru, India — In a significant step for India’s deep-tech and semiconductor ecosystem, AGNIT Semiconductors, a Bengaluru-based semiconductor startup specializing in advanced Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, has successfully raised $2.6 million in a seed extension equity round. The funding round was led by Shastra VC, with continued participation from existing investors 3one4 Capital and Zephyr Peacock India.

The new capital infusion will enable the company to scale production of Gallium Nitride components to 100,000 units within the next 24 months, strengthen its manufacturing capabilities, and expand into telecom infrastructure and high-performance power semiconductor devices. The development marks a major milestone as AGNIT transitions from research validation to real-world commercial deployments.

Accelerating the Next Generation of Semiconductor Technology

Gallium Nitride (GaN) has rapidly emerged as one of the most promising materials for next-generation electronics. Compared to traditional silicon-based chips, GaN semiconductors offer significantly higher power efficiency, faster switching speeds, and smaller device sizes, making them highly valuable for advanced communication systems, defense electronics, and power management technologies.

With the newly secured funding, AGNIT plans to move its pilot-stage innovations toward large-scale manufacturing, positioning itself as a key player in India’s emerging semiconductor supply chain.

According to company leadership, the investment represents a critical moment in AGNIT’s journey as it shifts focus from validating cutting-edge research to delivering commercial-grade semiconductor solutions for high-impact industries.

Scaling Production to Meet Growing Demand

The startup has outlined an ambitious roadmap to increase GaN component production to one lakh units over the next two years. This expansion is expected to support growing demand from sectors such as telecommunications, defense electronics, and power infrastructure.

AGNIT’s first strategic products are currently undergoing pilot testing across multiple systems. The company expects commercial shipments of its initial GaN-based solutions to begin by July 2027, marking the start of full-scale product deployment.

By advancing its manufacturing capacity and product development pipeline, AGNIT aims to address a rapidly growing market where performance, energy efficiency, and miniaturization are becoming essential requirements.

Transforming Deep Research Into Real-World Systems

Speaking about the company’s progress, Hareesh Chandrasekar, CEO and Co-Founder of AGNIT Semiconductors, emphasized the importance of translating years of scientific research into practical applications.

He noted that the funding will accelerate the company’s transition from laboratory research to integrated technology solutions deployed across real-world systems.

Chandrasekar highlighted that AGNIT’s core technology is built upon more than 15 years of research conducted at the Indian Institute of Science, one of India’s leading research institutions.

“What excites me most is seeing the science move into real systems,” he said, noting that three different radio-frequency GaN products are already being tested across Indian strategic defense platforms.

This transition represents a crucial step in proving the commercial viability of AGNIT’s GaN innovations.

Strengthening India’s Semiconductor Capabilities

India has been actively pushing to develop a robust semiconductor ecosystem, and companies like AGNIT are becoming vital contributors to that effort.

The startup was originally incubated within a Gallium Nitride ecosystem center at the Indian Institute of Science, supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The initiative was designed to nurture advanced semiconductor technologies and build domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Additionally, AGNIT has partnered with the Ministry of Defence through its Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) program, signing an agreement to develop GaN-based wireless transmitters for defense communication systems.

These collaborations highlight the strategic importance of GaN technology in national security, telecommunications infrastructure, and advanced electronics.

A Rapidly Expanding Market Opportunity

AGNIT is targeting opportunities in radio-frequency semiconductor chips and high-performance power devices, two sectors experiencing strong global growth.

Together, these markets represent an estimated addressable opportunity of approximately $950 million for GaN-based components in India alone.

Industry experts believe GaN will play a critical role in enabling next-generation technologies, including:

  • Advanced radar systems
  • 5G and future telecom infrastructure
  • High-efficiency power electronics
  • Aerospace and defense communication systems

By focusing on these sectors, AGNIT aims to establish itself as a leading supplier of high-performance GaN semiconductor solutions.

Investor Confidence in AGNIT’s Vision

Investors participating in the round expressed strong confidence in the startup’s technology and growth strategy.

Ashis Nayak, Founding Partner at Shastra VC, noted that Gallium Nitride is becoming a critical technology foundation for modern electronics.

According to Nayak, GaN-based chips enable greater power efficiency, compact device architectures, and enhanced system performance, making them ideal for advanced radar systems and telecom networks.

He also highlighted AGNIT’s vertically integrated business model, which provides the company with end-to-end control across:

  • Wafer manufacturing
  • Semiconductor device design
  • Chip fabrication

This integrated approach allows AGNIT to accelerate research cycles, optimize product performance, and bring innovations to market faster.

Navigating the Global GaN Landscape

The global semiconductor industry is witnessing a competitive race to dominate GaN technology. Recent developments have further reshaped the landscape, including the decision by TSMC to exit the GaN foundry business.

This shift has left Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) as the largest GaN fabrication player globally, opening opportunities for emerging companies to build new capabilities in the space.

For AGNIT, the evolving global market presents a strategic opportunity to strengthen India’s presence in the high-performance semiconductor sector.

Building the Future of Semiconductor Innovation

Since its inception, AGNIT has raised $7.47 million in total funding, reflecting growing confidence from investors in its technology and market potential.

With fresh funding, the company plans to continue expanding its portfolio of radio-frequency chips and advanced power semiconductor devices, while scaling manufacturing infrastructure and accelerating product commercialization.

As demand for faster, more efficient electronics continues to rise, AGNIT is positioning itself at the forefront of India’s next wave of semiconductor innovation.

By bridging deep academic research with scalable manufacturing and real-world applications, the startup is helping shape the future of high-performance electronics, telecom networks, and defense technologies.
