The practice of cultivating plants and livestock agriculture was the key development in the
rise of human civilization.
The history of agriculture began thousands of years ago & with changing times &
Technology it has been rapidly evolving ever since.
Agricultural development is one of the most powerful tools to end extreme poverty, boost
shared prosperity, and feed a projected 9.7 billion people by 2050.
The vitality of the agriculture sector can be seen from the fact that the growth in the
agriculture sector is two to four times more effective in raising incomes among the poorest
compared to other sectors.
Agriculture is also crucial to economic growth: in 2018, it accounted for 4% of global gross
domestic product (GDP) and in some developing countries, it can account for more than
25% of GDP.
But agriculture-driven growth, poverty reduction, and food security are at risk: Climate
change could cut crop yields, especially in the world’s most food-insecure regions.
Agriculture, forestry, and land use change are responsible for about 25% of greenhouse gas
emissions. Mitigation in the agriculture sector is part of the solution to climate change.
Climate change also leads to changing crop patterns as unforeseen events are more likely to
occur than ever before. This may lead to or have already started leading to food insecurity in
certain parts of the world.

The fact that 65% of poor working adults made a living through agriculture doesn't help
either as it means too much dependency on agriculture in the coming years.
Food wastage is also one of the important problems in the agriculture industry. One third of
food produced globally is either lost or wasted. Addressing food loss and waste is critical to
improving food and nutrition security.
Food insecurity can worsen diet quality and increase the risk of various forms of malnutrition,
potentially leading to undernutrition as well as people being overweight and obese. The cost
of healthy diets is unaffordable for more than 3 billion people in the world.
The road ahead for the agriculture sector is to make it more efficient by using modern
technology. Efforts have already been put by the countries world over as they try to build
supply chains with more focus on allied activities like food processing industries etc.
