AI ‘memory’ in ChatGPT remembers paying customers’ preferences

OpenAI’s chatbot expands on the functions of a personal assistant by retaining information about ChatGPT Plus customers.

In February, OpenAI unveiled the Memory feature, which enables ChatGPT to keep prompts, inquiries, and other modifications for a longer period. It was only accessible to a “small portion” of users at the time, but now ChatGPT Plus paying customers outside of Europe and Korea can utilize it.

To improve the personalization of the chatbot’s responses, ChatGPT Memory operates in two ways. First, you can instruct ChatGPT to recall certain details. Secondly, it can learn from talks by mimicking the same kind of discussions as other algorithms in our apps. Memory advances ChatGPT’s AI assistant capabilities. It doesn’t need to be reminded to incorporate your preferences once it has them stored in memory.

Users will always have a choice over what ChatGPT maintains (and what is used for additional training), according to OpenAI. This is because certain users may find it unsettling if chatbots know them in this manner.

Unlike the last test, OpenAI notes in a blog post, ChatGPT will now notify users when memories are modified. By examining the data the chatbot collected from discussions and even instructing ChatGPT to “forget” undesired aspects, users can control what information ChatGPT remembers.

Examples of how OpenAI has applied Memory are as follows:

  • -You have stated that headings, bullet points, and an action item summary at the bottom are how you like your meeting notes to be formatted. ChatGPT keeps this in mind and uses it to summarize meetings.
  • You tell me that your toddler daughter adores jellyfish. A jellyfish with a party hat is what ChatGPT recommends when you ask it to design her birthday card.
  • You informed ChatGPT that you are the owner of a local coffee business. ChatGPT can help you come up with ideas for a social media post commemorating a new location.
  • You prefer to offer 50-minute classes with follow-up activities as a kindergarten teacher with twenty-five children. When ChatGPT assists you in creating lesson plans, it keeps this in mind.

When in a live conversation, ChatGPT can always remember specifics. For instance, if you ask the chatbot to create an email, you can immediately follow up with “make it more professional,” and ChatGPT will remember that you were discussing emails. That all evaporates, though, if you wait long enough or strike up a new chat.

The reason why Memory won’t be available in Korea or Europe was not disclosed by OpenAI. Memory will be available to ChatGPT Enterprise and Teams subscribers as well as custom GPTs on the GPT Store, according to the business, although it did not disclose when.
