Apple showed at WWDC 2024 how generative AI is integrated with ChatGPT and Apple Intelligence. Craig Federighi suggested that upcoming iPhone releases would use Google’s Gemini AI models.
At the WWDC 2024 event on Monday, Apple unveiled the most recent iterations of its operating systems for the iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Vision Pro, and Apple Watch. Naturally, artificial intelligence (AI) was a big draw at the event. The tech giant with headquarters in Cupertino, California, announced that ChatGPT would be integrated into its multiple operating systems, along with its venture into generative AI through Apple Intelligence.
Numerous rumors surfaced before this year’s WWDC, indicating that Apple was attempting to reach an agreement with Google to integrate Gemini’s generative AI capabilities into iPhones. However, it appears that OpenAI outperformed its competitor, and Apple ultimately chose to employ ChatGPT to enhance many AI capabilities in iOS 18.
According to Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Apple, the tech giant would potentially consider integrating Google’s Gemini AI models into iPhones in the future. Spea
Federighi said, “We think people are going to have a preference perhaps for certain models that they want to use, maybe one that’s great for creative writing or one that they prefer for coding,” during a conversation at WWDC 2024. Therefore, our ultimate goal is to allow people to bring the model of their choice.
“Therefore, in the future, we can be looking forward to integrating with various models, such as Google Gemini. Nothing to report, really, but that’s our course of action.” The senior Apple executive continued.
iPhones with ChatGPT integration: On Monday, Apple revealed that it is integrating ChatGPT with Siri, enabling it to seek assistance from OpenAI’s chatbot as needed. OpenAI won’t be able to keep any requests, users’ IP addresses will be hidden, and users will be contacted before their requests are submitted to ChatGPT.
Utilizing the most recent GPT-4o model, ChatGPT will also be integrated into other Apple apps to enhance the writing experience and produce images.
