In today’s entrepreneurship scenario, Asha Arondekar stands out as a leader who prioritizes social impact alongside business growth. As the founder of Global to Local, she has transitioned from a background in clinical biochemistry to spearheading a movement that brings authentic Goan products to a wider market while empowering rural women. Her journey, spanning over three decades, illustrates a consistent focus on opening paths for others and building sustainable economic ecosystems.
The Entrepreneurial Spark
The professional journey of Asha Arondekar began far from the world of social commerce. A native of Goa, she pursued a Master’s in Clinical Biochemistry. While her father, a doctor, envisioned her carrying forward his medical legacy, a single guest lecture by Kiran Mazumdar Shaw during her college days changed her trajectory. The speech served as a pivotal moment, influencing Asha to pursue entrepreneurship at the age of 19.
Asha began her entrepreneurial journey by directly applying her academic expertise, launching a pharma research venture. She started with the trading of a specific product before expanding into manufacturing and international export. Despite having no formal background in operations, she gained the necessary nuances of business management through direct experience on the shop floor. This foundation in research and manufacturing provided the operational rigor she would later apply to diverse industries, including a wellness chain of salons and spas in Goa.
The Genesis of Global to Local
The concept for Global to Local emerged in 2020, as a direct response to the socio-economic challenges of the global pandemic. During this period, rural women in Goa reached out to Asha, expressing a critical lack of financial resources. Recognizing the need for a dedicated platform, she founded Global to Local to provide a bridge between their goods and potential buyers.
The company is dedicated to its mission of supporting authentic Goan products made by rural women. Starting as a joint initiative with just 20 women, the effort has since grown significantly, now empowering over 100 rural Goan women. By providing both physical and online sales platforms, the company enables these women to achieve financial independence while preserving local traditions.
Overcoming Operational Hurdles
Building Global to Local needed addressing significant logistical and cultural challenges. In the early stages of her career, Asha faced the hurdle of being a teenage entrepreneur, which required her to work harder to establish credibility. With her current venture, the challenges were more systemic, involving the establishment of a reliable supply chain and logistics network across rural Goa.
Integration of Values and Leadership
Asha’s leadership style is heavily influenced by her 20-year practice of the Art of Living under Guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji. She credits this spiritual foundation with providing the clarity and focus necessary to manage a demanding professional role while remaining grounded.
Asha promotes an integrated approach to professional and personal life, moving beyond the traditional concept of work-life balance. By setting clear priorities, she finds that managing executive responsibilities becomes a manageable task rather than a constant struggle. Her vision of a “responsible woman entrepreneur” involves moving beyond simple profit-seeking to “profit with purpose,” ensuring that her success creates opportunities for other women to grow economically and socially.
Future Vision, Scaling Impact
Looking toward the next two years, Asha plans to scale the operations of Global to Local significantly. The core of this transformation is the development of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. This facility aims to involve a larger number of rural women and self-help groups through a centralized system that ensures consistent quality and quantity.
The ultimate goal of this expansion is to take Global to Local international, moving Goan craftsmanship from a local context to a global stage. For aspiring women leaders, Asha advises to prioritize courage over comfort and to commit to actively empowering others as they advance in their careers.
