Fawn Weaver Made History by Turning Uncle Nearest into America’s most-awarded billion-dollar Whiskey Brand

Fawn Weaver

The Inspiring Journey of a Visionary Who Reshaped the Spirits Industry with Legacy, Grit, and Love

When Fawn Weaver stumbled upon a little-known story about Nathan “Nearest” Green—the first known African American master distiller and the man who taught Jack Daniel how to make whiskey—she had no idea it would change the course of her life, and the spirits industry forever. What started as a spark of curiosity turned into Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, a billion-dollar brand rewriting the rules of heritage, ownership, and excellence in the whiskey world.

From Curiosity to Calling

Fawn Weaver isn’t your typical spirits industry mogul. A bestselling author, entrepreneur, and investor, Weaver was on a trip to Singapore in 2016 when she came across a New York Times article about the real story behind Jack Daniel’s whiskey. The article mentioned that a formerly enslaved man named Nearest Green was the true master distiller behind Jack Daniel’s success—a story long buried under the weight of time and racial injustice.

“I was intrigued—not just by the story, but by the man,” Fawn said in an interview. “Why hadn’t we heard of him? Why wasn’t his name on a bottle?”

That question became her mission.

Building a Legacy-First Brand

Instead of pitching a documentary or writing a book, Weaver took a radically different approach: she decided to build a whiskey brand that would honor Green’s legacy. In 2017, she launched Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, named after the man himself.

But launching a whiskey brand wasn’t easy—especially as a Black woman in a white, male-dominated industry. Weaver, however, wasn’t just breaking into the industry—she was reimagining it.

“I didn’t enter the whiskey business to sell alcohol,” Fawn said. “I entered it to cement a legacy, to right a historical wrong, and to ensure future generations know Nearest Green’s name.”

Weaver put her own money into the venture—self-funding the early stages to ensure she had complete creative and strategic control. She and her husband, Keith, acquired a 300-acre property in Shelbyville, Tennessee, where they built the Nearest Green Distillery—the first in the country named after a Black distiller.

From Underdog to Unicorn

In just a few short years, Uncle Nearest became the fastest-growing independent American whiskey brand in U.S. history. By 2022, it had been awarded more than 450 medals, including top honors at international competitions. It became the most-awarded American whiskey brand three years in a row.

But the real jaw-dropper came in 2023 when Uncle Nearest was valued at over $1 billion—officially entering unicorn status. It became not just a whiskey brand, but a cultural movement, built on authenticity, storytelling, and legacy.

As Fawn proudly put it, “We didn’t create a whiskey brand—we built a love brand. People don’t just drink Uncle Nearest. They believe in it. They feel connected to it.”

Fawn Weaver’s Net Worth

With the brand’s meteoric rise, Fawn Weaver’s estimated net worth crossed $100 million by 2024, making her one of the richest self-made Black women entrepreneurs in America. Most of her wealth stems from her ownership stake in Uncle Nearest Inc., along with her prior success as an author and investor.

Weaver, however, is quick to point out that wealth was never the goal:

“Wealth is a byproduct of purpose-driven work done with excellence. I didn’t chase money—I chased legacy.”

Purpose-Driven Growth

One of Weaver’s most powerful moves was turning Uncle Nearest into more than a business—it became a platform for Black excellence. In 2020, she launched the Nearest & Jack Advancement Initiative, a $5 million partnership with the Jack Daniel Distillery to increase diversity within the American whiskey industry.

Later, she established the Nearest Green Foundation, which offers scholarships to Green’s descendants and funds education programs for aspiring Black distillers and entrepreneurs.

“When we rise, we bring others with us,” said Weaver. “This isn’t just about one man’s legacy—it’s about all the untold stories that deserve to be heard.”

Industry Recognition and Awards

Fawn Weaver‘s trailblazing work hasn’t gone unnoticed. She’s been honored with multiple awards and recognitions, including:

  • Forbes’ Top 50 Over 50 (2022)
  • Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Southeast (2022)
  • Female Founders 100 (2021 and 2023)
  • TIME100 Next List for leaders shaping the future (2023)
  • Named one of Adweek’s Most Inspiring Women in Business
  • Recognized as one of Wine Enthusiast’s 40 Tastemakers of America

Her achievements make her not just a whiskey pioneer but a shining example of modern Black entrepreneurship at its finest.

An Unstoppable Force

Today, Weaver stands as the first Black woman to lead a major spirits brand—and one of the very few women founders of a billion-dollar beverage company. She’s not only reshaped what representation looks like in the spirits world but also how business can be done with integrity and soul.

Her leadership philosophy is as sharp as it is soulful: “If you build something on love, authenticity, and excellence, you don’t need gimmicks. People feel it.”

Weaver’s journey—from discovering an obscure historical footnote to transforming it into a globally recognized brand—illustrates what happens when history meets heart, and grit meets vision.

What Makes Uncle Nearest So Special?

Beyond the story, Uncle Nearest whiskey stands out for its quality. Each batch is crafted using the Lincoln County Process—a charcoal filtering method Nearest Green mastered—which gives the whiskey its signature smoothness. But it’s the brand’s authenticity that keeps fans coming back.

Every bottle is a toast to a man who never got the credit he deserved, until now.

“We’re not here to make history,” Weaver says. “We’re here to unearth it.”

Final Pour: A Legacy Bottled

Fawn Weaver’s success with Uncle Nearest isn’t just a business triumph; it’s a cultural landmark. She’s built more than a unicorn brand—she’s created a legacy that connects the past, present, and future. And in doing so, she’s changed the spirits industry forever.

With every bottle of Uncle Nearest opened, a story is retold, a legacy is honored, and a dream is fulfilled.

As Weaver often reminds her team: “We don’t chase dollars—we chase purpose. The dollars follow.”
