Google Maps Introduces “Ask Maps” and Immersive Navigation to Transform How People Explore and Drive

Ask Maps

Google Maps unveils Ask Maps for conversational search and Immersive Navigation with 3D driving guidance, smarter routes, and AI-powered travel insights.

Google Maps is redefining what digital maps can do with two major innovations — Ask Maps, a conversational search feature powered by advanced AI, and Immersive Navigation, the platform’s most significant navigation upgrade in more than a decade. By combining the world’s most up-to-date mapping data with powerful AI models, Google is turning map exploration into an interactive conversation while making driving guidance more intuitive and visual.

Ask Maps: Conversational Answers for Real-World Questions

The new Ask Maps feature allows users to ask complex, real-world questions and receive conversational responses directly within Google Maps. Instead of manually searching through reviews or listings, users can simply tap the “Ask Maps” button and ask questions such as where to charge a phone quickly or find a public tennis court with lights available at night.

The feature analyzes information from more than 300 million locations worldwide, supported by a community of over 500 million contributors who provide reviews, updates, and insights about local places. This data allows Ask Maps to deliver personalized suggestions and helpful details before users even begin their journey.

For example, travelers planning a road trip can ask for recommended stops along their route and receive directions, estimated travel times, and useful tips from other visitors. The system can even surface hidden trails, scenic viewpoints, or local attractions that may not appear in traditional search results.

Personalization also plays a key role. Ask Maps considers previous searches, saved places, and user preferences to deliver tailored recommendations. Someone who frequently searches for vegan dining options may automatically receive suggestions that match those preferences when planning a meeting spot with friends.

Once users select a location, the feature makes it easy to take action — from booking restaurant reservations to saving locations or sharing plans with friends. Navigation directions can be launched instantly with just a few taps.

Ask Maps is currently rolling out to users in the United States and India on Android and iOS, with desktop support expected soon.

Immersive Navigation: A New Era of Driving Guidance

Alongside conversational exploration, Google Maps is introducing Immersive Navigation, a complete redesign of the driving experience that brings richer visuals and more intuitive directions to the platform.

The new navigation interface offers a dynamic 3D view of the environment, accurately reflecting surrounding buildings, overpasses, and terrain. Important road elements such as lanes, crosswalks, stop signs, and traffic lights are highlighted to help drivers confidently navigate turns, merges, and intersections.

This spatial awareness is powered by advanced AI models that analyze Street View imagery and aerial photographs, allowing Maps to create a highly detailed and realistic representation of routes and landmarks.

Smarter Guidance for Every Stage of the Drive

The update also introduces several enhancements designed to make driving smoother and less stressful.

Expanded route visibility:

Drivers can now see a broader view of their route ahead, with smart zooming and semi-transparent buildings that help visualize upcoming turns or lane changes well in advance. Voice instructions have also been redesigned to sound more natural and conversational.

Alternative route insights:

Google Maps continuously processes traffic information — incorporating more than five million updates every second worldwide. The system now explains trade-offs between alternate routes, such as choosing a longer drive with lighter traffic or a faster route that includes toll roads. It also alerts drivers to real-time disruptions like accidents or construction.

Guidance for the final destination:

Before departing, drivers can preview their destination using Street View imagery and receive suggestions for nearby parking. As they approach, Maps highlights the correct building entrance and indicates which side of the street to use, helping users navigate the final moments of their trip more confidently.

Gradual Global Rollout

Immersive Navigation is beginning to roll out across the United States, with broader availability expected in the coming months on compatible Android and iOS devices, as well as CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google built-in.

With conversational AI search and immersive driving guidance, Google Maps is evolving from a traditional navigation tool into a smarter, more personalized travel companion.
