Google Rolls Out Gemini AI Update to All Android Users

Gemini AI

In a sweeping update that impacts billions of Android users globally, Google has confirmed the expansion of its AI assistant, Gemini, across core mobile applications — including Phones, Messages, WhatsApp, and Utilities. This rollout, set to intensify on July 7, 2025, has sparked a wave of concern and confusion among users and privacy advocates alike.

Gemini AI Update: What’s Changing?

Google’s latest move brings Gemini AI deeper into the Android experience, promising users enhanced support for daily tasks such as sending texts, initiating calls, and setting reminders — even when Gemini Apps Activity is turned off. This means that AI features will function across your device, regardless of whether you’ve actively opted in.

In a user notification, Google stated: “Gemini will soon be able to help you use Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Utilities on your phone, whether your Gemini Apps Activity is on or off.”

This triggered an immediate backlash and sparked media headlines like “Google to Gemini users: We’re going to look at your texts whether you like it or not” — a claim first reported by Gizmodo that resonated with widespread public concern.

However, Google has since clarified that while Gemini’s functionality will remain available, there is a critical distinction: “With Gemini Apps Activity turned off, Gemini chats are not being reviewed or used to improve our AI models,” a Google spokesperson explained.

The Privacy Trade-Off

Until now, users who wished to use Gemini alongside messaging apps had to keep Gemini Activity enabled — a setting that allowed interactions to be stored and analyzed, raising significant privacy concerns. With this new update, Google appears to address that issue by ensuring that user data won’t feed into AI training models when the activity setting is disabled.

But there’s a catch: even when activity tracking is disabled, Gemini will still store interactions on your account for 72 hours. While Google maintains this is necessary for functionality and user experience, it leaves open questions about potential vulnerabilities in that brief window.

The Bigger Picture: Gmail, AI, and a Lack of Choice

The concern isn’t isolated to Android alone. Gmail’s AI upgrades, involving smart replies and AI-enhanced search, are also drawing scrutiny. Critics argue that these updates clash with Google’s tentative moves toward quasi end-to-end encryption — creating a dichotomy where one side pushes security while the other introduces more data exposure.

Unlike the Android update, Gmail’s AI enhancements offer users little to no control. As privacy expert and tech analyst Zak Doffman has pointed out, “Gmail users are being nudged toward AI features with limited transparency or the ability to opt out meaningfully.” “We need the same transparent and easy privacy choices for Gmail as we are now beginning to see with Android,” Doffman emphasized.

Concerns Grow Over Student and Youth Exposure

Perhaps most concerning is AI’s rapid expansion into educational settings. According to TechRadar, Gemini is now being deployed in schools with the promise of assisting teachers and students through features like lesson planning, instant feedback, and workflow support.

While Google claims, “Gemini for Education follows the same data protection as Workspace for Education, ensuring student data is not used to train AI models or reviewed by humans,” experts remain skeptical about whether such guarantees will hold as the AI ecosystem scales.

This move raises critical ethical questions about data exposure for younger users who may not yet have a firm grasp of digital privacy norms.

How Does Google Rank on AI Privacy?

In the latest Gen AI and LLM Data Privacy Ranking 2025 by Incogni, Google ranks poorly — just above Microsoft’s Copilot and slightly better than Meta, which occupies the bottom slot. The study highlights: “As these sophisticated models become increasingly integrated into daily workflows, the potential for unauthorized data sharing, misuse, and personal data exposure has surged faster than privacy watchdogs or assessments can keep up with.”

Surprisingly, OpenAI’s ChatGPT ranks significantly better in terms of data transparency and user control, which may explain why many users prefer independent AI tools over default Big Tech integrations.

Incogni’s report warns: “Maintaining awareness of evolving privacy risks and data handling practices has simply become impractical for the average user.”

A Call for Balance

As Gemini becomes a central part of the Android and Google experience, the conversation around user privacy becomes more critical than ever. While Google stresses the convenience and productivity that AI integration brings, users are increasingly wary of how their personal data is being used — and whether true consent is ever really part of the equation.

A particularly striking observation from Futurism captured the zeitgeist:

“WhatsApp is now offering AI summaries of text threads for those too lazy to read through their messages themselves… Because what says ‘I care’ like breezing through an AI-generated summary of the family group chat?”

The humor thinly veils a larger issue: in our rush for convenience, are we compromising fundamental rights to privacy?

What Android Users Should Do Now

Review your Gemini settings: Go to your device settings > Google > Gemini > Activity Controls to see what’s being tracked.

Understand the 72-hour rule: Even if activity is off, data may still be stored temporarily. Be mindful of what you share.

Stay informed: AI policy and data privacy standards are evolving rapidly. Regularly check for updates from credible sources.

In a digital world increasingly powered by AI, awareness, and agency have never been more important. As Google’s Gemini expands its reach, users must weigh the benefits of smart automation against the value of their own digital privacy.
