Google has introduced Nano Banana Pro, its latest AI-powered image generation and editing model, marking another significant milestone in the company’s expanding generative AI portfolio. Built on the newly launched Gemini 3 Pro, this upgraded tool promises sharper creativity, better consistency, and broader capabilities—pushing Google further into the competitive AI landscape dominated by OpenAI.
A Next-Gen Makeover for Google’s Viral Image Tool
The original Nano Banana, released in August, became a viral phenomenon as users across social media transformed their selfies and pet photos into hyper-realistic 3D figurines. Now, with Nano Banana Pro, Google is taking that creativity boom to the next level.
Powered by the advanced architecture of Gemini 3 Pro—announced just two days before—the Pro version expands the tool’s intelligence and versatility. According to Josh Woodward, Vice President of Google Labs and Gemini, the new model excels in much more than stylized portraits.
“It’s incredible at infographics. It can make slide decks. It can take up to 14 different images, or five different characters, and keep that character consistency,” Woodward told CNBC. He added that internal teams have experimented by converting code snippets, LinkedIn resumes, and complex text into visual summaries—all within seconds.
Gemini Ecosystem Growth Fuels Google’s AI Push
Google’s aggressive rollout of Gemini-powered features has helped drive strong market confidence. Alphabet shares rose 4% on Thursday, following the launch of Gemini 3 and Nano Banana Pro. The company reports surging user interest:
- 13 million new Gemini app users in four days, soon after Nano Banana’s original release
- 650+ million monthly active users on the Gemini app
- 2 billion monthly users interacting with Gemini-powered AI Overviews
In comparison, OpenAI recently announced updates to its GPT-5 model to make ChatGPT more conversational, and ChatGPT currently ranks #1 among free apps on Apple’s App Store, while Gemini sits in second place. Google also confirmed that Ultra subscribers will be the first to experience Nano Banana Pro inside Flow, the company’s AI filmmaking tool.
Additionally, the Gemini app now includes a feature that detects whether an uploaded image was generated by Google AI—supporting the company’s ongoing efforts toward transparency and safety. Images created on free accounts will include a watermark, while Google AI Ultra users will receive watermark-free outputs.

While OpenAI still leads the generative AI market, Google is rapidly scaling to meet rising demand. Woodward notes a surge in paid Gemini subscribers seeking higher generation limits and access to the most advanced models.
“We’re seeing high numbers of people coming to lots of these products,” he said. “That’s really the best problem to have—there’s a lot of demand, and we’re trying to figure out how to serve it.”
With new innovations like Flow, an AI filmmaking engine, and Genie, a world-building research model, Google aims to build an ecosystem that spans creativity, productivity, visual storytelling, and enterprise-grade AI solutions.
