In a significant boost to India’s education and skill development landscape, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced the establishment of the country’s fourth Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Education. With a total outlay of ₹500 crore, this initiative aims to integrate AI-driven solutions into the educational framework, enhancing learning methodologies and research capabilities.
Strengthening India’s AI Ecosystem in Education
Building upon the three AI Centers of Excellence set up in 2023 for agriculture, healthcare, and sustainable cities, the newly announced AI center will focus on revolutionizing the education sector. This move underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technologies for academic and professional advancement.
Five National Centres of Excellence for Skilling
In line with the ‘Make for India, Make for the World’ initiative, the government will establish five National Centres of Excellence for Skilling. These centers will be developed through global partnerships, ensuring that Indian youth receive industry-relevant expertise. The initiative will cover key aspects such as curriculum design, training of trainers, a structured skill certification framework, and regular competency assessments.
Finance Minister Sitharaman emphasized the importance of these centers in bridging the skill gap and empowering the workforce with practical knowledge tailored to global industry demands.
Expanding IIT Infrastructure to Accommodate Growing Student Numbers
The government is making substantial investments to expand the infrastructure of premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Over the past decade, student intake at IITs has surged from 65,000 to 1.35 lakh, reflecting the rising demand for quality higher education in India.
To further accommodate this growth, additional facilities will be developed at five IITs established post-2014, creating space for an additional 6,500 students. IIT Patna, in particular, will witness an expansion in hostel and other infrastructure capacities to support the growing student population.
Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme: Promoting Indian Languages in Education
Aiming to bridge the language barrier in education, the government has introduced the Bharatiya Bhasha Pustak Scheme. This initiative will facilitate the availability of digital Indian language books for schools and higher education institutions. By ensuring that students can access study materials in their native languages, the scheme will enhance comprehension and learning outcomes across various disciplines.
Major Boost in Medical Education
Recognizing the need for increased medical education infrastructure, the government has announced the addition of 10,000 undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats next year. Over the past decade, medical seats have increased by 130% to 1.1 lakh, with plans to add another 75,000 seats over the next five years.
In another crucial move, cancer centers will be established in all district hospitals to improve healthcare accessibility and specialized treatment facilities.

The series of initiatives announced by the government reflect a comprehensive approach to strengthening India’s education, skilling, and healthcare sectors.
