Dennis Maliq Barnes, a 16-year-old senior at International High School of New Orleans, has received admission offers from more than 170 colleges and scholarships totaling over $9 million.
Initially, Barnes did not set out to break any records, but as he applied to more schools, the numbers grew, and he became more interested in the financial aid aspect. Eventually, he realized he was close to a record and decided to go for it.
Despite this, he takes pride in his acceptances and scholarships and was not surprised when he reached the milestone.
Barnes has a 4.98 GPA and plans to pursue computer science followed by law, but has not yet decided on his next steps.
He will make a final decision in early May, before his graduation on May 24th. He credits God and his family for being a part of this remarkable journey, and his school has submitted his record-breaking achievement to the Guinness Book of World Records for consideration.
