The senators discussed how the development of artificial intelligence (AI) would affect the workplace throughout the hearing. For the first time, IBM Chief Privacy & Trust Officer Christina Montgomery acknowledged the hazards of AI on workers in diverse industries when she testified with Altman before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Some jobs would change, she said. Altman, however, presented an alternative viewpoint. Altman claimed that while other AI models notably GPT-4, OpenAI’s most recent large-language AI model, excel at finishing jobs, they are not yet able to do a full job. According to Altman, “GPT-4 will completely automate away some jobs.” And new ones will be created, which we think will be far better.
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, claimed that GPT-4 and other AI-based systems excel at completing tasks rather than jobs. Altman stated that one of his major concerns is that AI will disrupt the labor market while testifying before a US Senate committee. “I predict that jobs will be significantly impacted…It’s crucial to realize GPT-4 is a tool, not a living thing, ” he continued.
Regarding GPT4, the most recent generative AI model from OpenAI, he continued, “I think it’s important to understand and think about it as a tool, not a creature.” He claimed that these models were “good at doing tasks, not jobs” and would therefore relieve some strain, but did not anticipate them to take the place of current employees.
