Micron Technology to Construct Semiconductor Assembly and Test Facility in Gujarat, India

Micron Technology, Inc., one of the world’s largest semiconductor companies, has unveiled plans to construct a state-of-the-art semiconductor assembly and test facility in Gujarat, India. The announcement coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to the United States.

According to a government official cited by Reuters, the union government has agreed to provide production-linked incentives worth 110 billion rupees ($1.34 billion) for the plant, which will be located in Gujarat.

This groundbreaking facility, the first of its kind in India, will specialize in assembly and test manufacturing for DRAM and NAND products, serving both domestic and international markets.

The construction of the facility will be carried out in phases, with the initial phase scheduled to commence in 2023. It will encompass 500,000 square feet of planned cleanroom space and is expected to become operational by late 2024. Micron intends to gradually expand the capacity in accordance with global demand patterns.

The second phase of the project, which will involve the construction of a facility similar in scale to Phase 1, is anticipated to begin in the latter half of the decade.

Micron’s investment in the project will amount to up to $825 million across the two phases, resulting in the creation of up to 5,000 new direct jobs at Micron and 15,000 community jobs over the coming years.

To support this endeavor, the Indian central government and the state of Gujarat will provide financial assistance and incentives, resulting in a combined investment of up to $2.75 billion by Micron and the two government entities over the course of both phases.

The new facility will be constructed and operated in accordance with Micron’s sustainability objectives, aligning with local and global environmental commitments.

Micron aims to meet or surpass Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold standards and will incorporate advanced water-saving technologies to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge.

The selection of Gujarat as the location for the facility was influenced by the state’s robust manufacturing infrastructure, favorable business environment, and a well-established talent pool available at the SANAND Industrial Park.

This facility forms a crucial part of Micron’s strategy to meet the anticipated long-term demand for memory and storage solutions worldwide, complementing the company’s global assembly and test network.
