Empowering solutions in healthcare, education, agriculture, and more, OpenAI expands its footprint in India’s AI-for-good movement.
OpenAI has taken a significant step to foster AI-driven innovation in India’s social sector by awarding API grants worth INR 1.28 crore (approximately USD 150,000) to 11 nonprofit organizations. The grants, distributed in the form of API credits, aim to empower these groups to build impactful AI applications across key areas like education, healthcare, agriculture, gender equity, and inclusion for people with disabilities.
This initiative is part of OpenAI’s broader AI for Impact Accelerator, which now operates under the umbrella of the OpenAI Academy. Designed to support mission-led organizations globally, the program in India highlights the transformative power of AI in addressing complex societal challenges at scale.
Championing India’s AI Potential
“India has demonstrated how artificial intelligence can be a powerful tool for inclusive innovation,” said Pragya Misra, OpenAI India’s Policy & Partnerships Lead. “These organizations are tackling some of the country’s toughest issues with compassion and creativity. Through the AI for Impact Accelerator, we’re not just offering support — we’re learning from them and ensuring that advanced AI tools serve real communities.”

These groups are already leveraging OpenAI’s powerful tools, such as ChatGPT, to enhance their platforms and outreach efforts for underserved communities.
More Than Just Funding
Beyond financial support, OpenAI’s program offers deep technical assistance, early access to cutting-edge tools, and collaborative learning experiences through cohort-based workshops. A recent session focused on advanced model capabilities helped grantees better understand and deploy OpenAI’s latest technologies for social good.
The initiative is run in partnership with The Agency Fund, Tech4Dev, and Turn.io, all of whom are actively involved in building an ecosystem that supports AI solutions for public benefit.
Aligning with India’s AI Vision
The accelerator program also contributes to the India AI Mission by expanding access to AI technology, nurturing local talent, and promoting the creation of scalable, home-grown solutions tailored to Indian needs.
India’s rapid adoption of AI tools is another testament to its growing digital influence. According to Mary Meeker’s AI Trends Report, India currently leads the world in ChatGPT usage, accounting for 13.5% of global monthly active users, surpassing even the United States (8.9%) and Indonesia (5.7%). India holds the third-highest global usage of the DeepSeek app, following China and Russia.
Plans for a Stronger Presence in Asia
Amid growing demand, OpenAI is reportedly exploring plans to establish a data center in India. In a move aimed at enhancing trust and compliance, the company has also introduced data residency options for organizations using its API, ChatGPT Enterprise, and ChatGPT Edu services. This new policy will enable users in India, as well as those in Japan, Singapore, and South Korea, to store their data locally while using OpenAI products.
Further expansion in the Asia-Pacific region seems imminent, with OpenAI executives expected to visit key countries to assess opportunities for AI infrastructure development and software deployment.
