OpenAI Unveils AI Jobs Platform and Certifications Set to Shake Up LinkedIn

OpenAI is taking a bold step into the future of work with the announcement of its upcoming AI-driven jobs platform—a move that could put the ChatGPT-maker in direct competition with Microsoft’s LinkedIn.

The new OpenAI Jobs Platform will utilize artificial intelligence to pair skilled candidates with companies seeking AI-ready talent. Unlike traditional job boards, the platform aims not only to serve large corporations but also to empower local businesses and governments.

“Importantly, the jobs platform won’t just be a way for big companies to attract more talent. It will have a track dedicated to helping local businesses compete and local governments find the AI talent they need,” said Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s chief executive officer of applications.

According to the company, the service is expected to launch by mid-2026.

Certification Program to Boost AI Skills

Alongside the jobs platform, OpenAI is expanding its OpenAI Academy with a certification program. This initiative is designed to help workers gain practical AI fluency—ranging from the basics of AI use at work to advanced fields like prompt engineering.

“We’re going to expand the Academy by offering certifications for different levels of AI fluency,” Simo explained, highlighting that learners will train using ChatGPT’s Study Mode, which turns the chatbot into an interactive teacher.

The company has set an ambitious goal: certifying 10 million Americans by 2030. Walmart, the U.S.’s largest private employer, has already joined as a launch partner.

“At Walmart, we know the future of retail won’t be defined by technology alone—it will be defined by people who know how to use it,” said John Furner, CEO of Walmart U.S.

A Potential Rival to LinkedIn

Both initiatives signal OpenAI’s growing influence in the professional development space, placing it in direct competition with LinkedIn’s job-matching and learning services. Microsoft, LinkedIn’s parent company, is also OpenAI’s largest investor, having poured an estimated $13 billion into the AI firm.

The tension between collaboration and competition has become increasingly visible, with Microsoft already labeling OpenAI as a competitor in certain markets.

AI, Jobs, and the Future of Work

The launch comes amid growing debates about AI’s impact on employment. While companies like Salesforce have cited AI in recent job cuts, research shows that workers with AI skills tend to earn higher salaries than those without.

Acknowledging this disruption, Simo emphasized the importance of preparing the workforce:

“Jobs will look different, companies will have to adapt, and all of us—from shift workers to CEOs—will have to learn how to work in new ways. What we can do is help more people become fluent in AI and connect them with companies that need their skills.”

With its Jobs Platform and Academy certifications, OpenAI is positioning itself as a key player in shaping the future of work—one where AI fluency could become as important as digital literacy once was.
