OpenAI launches ChatGPT Atlas, a smart browser that embeds AI into real-time browsing, enabling instant assistance, summaries, and task automation.
OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Atlas, a groundbreaking web browser that seamlessly integrates ChatGPT into real-time browsing. This launch marks a major leap in extending ChatGPT’s capabilities beyond the traditional chat window, enabling users to access AI-powered assistance directly as they explore the web.
Reimagining the Web Experience
Announced by Fidji Simo (CEO of Applications), Nick Turley (Head of ChatGPT), and Leah Belsky (VP of Education) through a series of LinkedIn posts, ChatGPT Atlas is now available on macOS for Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users.
The new browser allows users to ask questions, summarize pages, manage tasks, and receive AI support instantly—all without switching tabs.
Fidji Simo described Atlas as part of OpenAI’s mission to make artificial intelligence universally accessible.
“We now live in a world where powerful intelligence is accessible to anyone. Yet most people only experience a fraction of what AI can do for them today,” she shared.
ChatGPT at the Core
Atlas is designed around ChatGPT, offering an intelligent sidebar that can explain, summarize, and generate content on any webpage.
A key addition, the “browser memories” feature, enables ChatGPT to recall context from previously visited sites. For instance, users can ask it to plan a meal based on recipes they’ve browsed earlier — demonstrating how AI can add continuity and personalization to everyday web use.
Simo emphasized that this evolution turns ChatGPT from a static chatbot into “an intuitive super-assistant that works across the services you need.”
Introducing Agent Mode
According to Nick Turley, the browser’s new Agent Mode transforms the web into an interactive experience. ChatGPT can now interpret webpages, answer contextual questions, and perform actions without leaving the site.
“ChatGPT can move between sites, find what you need, and handle simple tasks as you browse,” Turley explained.
He added that this development moves ChatGPT closer to becoming “an operating system that helps you get things done across the web and beyond.”
Transforming Learning and Research
Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s VP of Education, highlighted Atlas’s potential to reshape digital learning.
“With Atlas, ChatGPT can now work alongside you as you browse — answering questions, offering suggestions, and helping you learn in context,” she said.
Students in OpenAI’s ChatGPTLab are already leveraging Atlas to summarize complex research papers, find related materials, and manage assignments directly within their browsers.
The Road Ahead
OpenAI sees ChatGPT Atlas as a significant step toward building a fully connected AI ecosystem that supports users’ daily lives and long-term goals.
Simo concluded,
“When we first released ChatGPT, we weren’t sure how people would use it. Now, with feedback from hundreds of millions of users worldwide, it’s clear ChatGPT must evolve into something far beyond a simple chatbot.”
