In December, OpenAI achieved a revenue milestone of $2 billion.
Kai-Fu Lee, a Chinese investor and serial entrepreneur, is optimistic that OpenAI will reach $1 trillion in revenue in the next two to three years. “In the not-too-distant future, OpenAI will probably be a trillion-dollar company,” Lee stated at a recent Fortune event.
“I have a really optimistic outlook for OpenAI. They’ve truly done an amazing and commendable job. GPT-4 remains the gold standard to this day. These are the claims made by Gemini Ultra and Claude 3, but if you utilize these models, the GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo are incredibly good and offer a terrific balance between, um, performance and cost (sic).”
He went on to say that even though he is concerned about their lack of transparency, he still thinks highly of them. “I can’t invest in any of them (Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI), but if I could, I would invest in OpenAI,” he remarked.
Lee established 01.AI in March of last year to create a major language model in-house for the Chinese market. Unlike OpenAI, which is closed source, it has surprisingly chosen the open source path.
GPT-4o, which OpenAI unveiled at its most recent Spring Update presentation, won many over with its “omni” capabilities—that is, its ability to work with text, visual, and audio. The town was soon abuzz with talk of OpenAI’s demos, which featured a real-time translation, a coding assistant, an AI tutor, a kind companion, a poet, and a singer.GPT-4o is now freely accessible to users thanks to OpenAI. “As a business, we will find many things to charge for, which will enable us to offer exceptional AI services for free to (hopefully) billions of people,” stated Altman.
According to Altman, they still haven’t figured out how to give consumers free access to pricey technologies like GPT-4. He emphasized that although it is part of their objective to offer cutting-edge AI technologies for free or at a minimum cost, the high costs now present a major obstacle.
The Financial Times reported in December that OpenAI has crossed the $2 billion revenue mark. According to the report, OpenAI anticipates this number to more than double by 2025, mostly due to the high demand from corporate clients wishing to use generative AI technologies in the workplace.
