Patrick Collison, CEO of Stripe, Emails Employees About 14% Layoffs

Technology companies have been making cost-cutting announcements, such as hiring freezes and layoffs, as the economy continues to deteriorate. Amazon, Alphabet, the parent company of Google, and Meta, the owner of Facebook, have all taken action to cut costs. Companies, Including Shopify, Coinbase, Netflix, and Spotify, have announced layoffs.

With a $95 billion value, Stripe, based in San Francisco, became the most valuable U.S. company last year. However, The Wall Street Journal reports that Stripe reportedly reduced its internal valuation to $74 billion in July due to economic unpredictability and a protracted tech downturn. It competes with Block’s Square payments and PayPal, processing billions of dollars in transactions annually from companies like Amazon, Salesforce, and Google.

According to Collison, Stripe plans to cut costs across the board and make personnel reductions. According to a message sent to employees on Thursday by CEO Patrick Collison, online payments firm Stripe is firing about 14% of its workforce. Because operating costs are rising too quickly, there will be cuts.

Collison noted in the document that the leadership had underestimated the rate of expansion of the internet economy. He predicted that the layoffs would severely hurt Stripe’s recruiting department.

Stripe, a leader in online payments, is reportedly letting 14% of its employees go. According to CNBC, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison informed staff members of the job losses in a memo. Around 1,100 employees will be let go by the corporation, leaving it with 7000 workers overall. The job cuts will affect numerous Stripe departments, and the business will hire fewer individuals in the upcoming year. Stripe plans to cut costs across the board in addition to the layoffs.

“We were much too optimistic about the internet economy’s near-team growth in 2022 and 2023 and underestimated both the likelihood and impact of a broader slowdown,” Stripe founders said in the memo.
