Perplexity AI challenges Amazon’s legal threat over its Comet AI browser, defending user rights and the rise of autonomous AI shopping assistants.
Perplexity AI Inc. has responded strongly to what it describes as Amazon.com Inc.’s first major legal action against an artificial intelligence firm. The dispute centers around Comet, Perplexity’s AI-powered web browser that allows users to conduct AI-assisted shopping on platforms like Amazon.
Founded by India-born Aravind Srinivas, Perplexity AI claims to have received an “aggressive” legal notice from Amazon, demanding that the company restrict its users from employing the Comet AI assistant while browsing the e-commerce giant’s website. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) titled “Bullying Is Not Innovation,” Srinivas publicly criticized Amazon’s move, stating that the company “will stand up for its users” and not allow itself to be “bullied” by the retail powerhouse.
“We would be happy to work with Amazon to create a win-win situation,” Srinivas noted. “But blocking our Comet Assistant and harming our users’ experience is unacceptable.”
The Clash Over AI Shopping
Comet’s Agentic AI technology enables users to seamlessly browse, compare, and purchase products on Amazon using intelligent automation—essentially transforming traditional window shopping into AI-driven shopping.
Amazon, however, has reportedly taken issue with this capability. According to Perplexity’s blog, the tech giant is “more focused on serving ads and promoting sponsored results” than on providing a truly user-first shopping experience.
During Amazon’s recent earnings call, CEO Andy Jassy addressed the topic of “agentic commerce,” confirming that Amazon is developing its own AI shopping assistants such as Rufus and Buy for Me. Jassy also noted that the company may collaborate with third-party AI agents in the future.
However, Perplexity alleges that Amazon’s current actions aim to “restrict user freedom” in order to protect its advertising revenue. The company’s blog described the move as not only “bullying” but “bonkers,” emphasizing that its mission is to defend user rights and promote fair, transparent AI experiences.
“Amazon became successful because users loved it for providing quality products at competitive prices,” the blog reads. “Agentic AI shopping is simply the next step in that evolution—and consumers already want it. Perplexity demands the right to deliver it.”
Understanding Agentic AI
Agentic AI represents the next phase in the evolution of generative artificial intelligence—a system capable of acting autonomously to achieve user-defined goals with minimal human oversight.
In an e-commerce context, Agentic AI can:
- Search for specific products across platforms like Amazon,
- Compare prices and features,
- Place orders, and
- Even facilitate payments automatically.
Unlike traditional online shopping, which often prioritizes sponsored listings or internal products, Agentic AI prioritizes the user’s best interest, offering unbiased, data-driven choices.
With this confrontation, Perplexity AI positions itself not only as a technology innovator but also as a defender of consumer choice in the age of AI-driven commerce.
