Recently, Meta laid off nearly 11,000 workers. After deciding to fire 11,000 employees, Meta garnered media attention late last week, overshadowing Twitter’s recent significant layoffs. It was just a matter of time before such a move also resulted in the demise of a few of the social media company’s ambitious initiatives.
According to reports, Meta planned to discontinue its Portal smart display for video chatting and its two unfinished smartwatch projects.
In a company meeting, according to a story by The Verge, Meta executives reportedly declared their intention to kill off wearables and Portal. These had just begun their development. The Milan sophisticated smartwatch, which costs $349 and has two built-in cameras for video chats, was scheduled to be on sale in spring 2023.
The business announced plans to introduce VR headsets the following year. According to Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, in an earnings call, the new high-end VR headset will enable high-resolution mixed reality to seamlessly integrate virtual things into the real world.
This comes after Meta recently let go of around 11,000 workers or roughly 13% of the company’s workforce.
Mark Zuckerberg recently claimed he handled the matter better than Elon Musk in a meeting. The Insider reported that he claimed Musk needed more time to prepare for the layoffs like Meta and other businesses had carefully.
