Reports: The cabinet approves a draft data protection bill and proposes a fine of $250 crore for violations

The Union Cabinet has accepted the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Bill 2023 draft, and it will likely be introduced during the forthcoming monsoon session of Parliament, according to a Wednesday report from India Today. According to the paper, India will have legal authority over all online and offline data. Under this measure, personal data can only be treated with the data subject’s consent. However, there are specific circumstances in which the government may want information for law and order and national security reasons.

The news agency PTI reported quoting sources that the law incorporates nearly all of the clauses from the most recent draft made available for comment by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The proposed bill does not give a general exemption to governmental bodies. “The Data Protection Board will decide cases of disagreement. People will have the option to ask a civil court for compensation. Many things will develop gradually, the source told the news organization.

After the law is enacted, people can inquire about how personal data is collected, stored, and processed. For each occurrence of a violation of the bill’s rules, organizations would be subject to fines of up to Rs 250 crore, according to the proposed legislation. “The Cabinet has approved the DPDP bill draft. It will be introduced in Parliament in the upcoming session, and the source informed PTI.

Parliament’s monsoon session will take place from July 20 to August 11.
