Samsung is expanding its foldable lineup this year by introducing the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5, which are expected to come with significant upgrades. One of the most anticipated improvements is the waterdrop hinge that will allow the foldable phones to close seamlessly without leaving a gap between the two sides.
In addition to the waterdrop hinge, rumors suggest that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will have a larger cover display than its predecessors. While the first Z Flip model had a tiny 1.1-inch cover display, the Z Flip 3 and Z Flip 4 increased it to 1.9 inches. Although it wasn’t a significant upgrade, it did make the cover screen more usable, which was a major improvement from the first Z Flip.
A recent rumor surrounding the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s outer display was accompanied by concept images and a video. The leakster, SuperRoader, claimed that these images and video showcased a Z Flip 5 design that was “200000% real.” The concept depicted a larger outer screen with an unusual shape. Our sources have now confirmed that the concept was highly accurate, and we have created our own mockup based on the actual design to share with you.
The outer display of the Z Flip 5 will offer a significantly larger display area, allowing for more functionality without having to unfold the phone. While taking high-quality selfies using the rear cameras will undoubtedly be the best use of the larger outer screen, it will also make tasks such as checking notifications and replying to messages more convenient.
It remains to be seen whether Samsung will allow users to use entire apps on the cover display, as is possible on the Motorola RAZR. Additionally, the exact size of the cover screen is uncertain. Our sources suggest that it will measure between 3 to 4 inches, although we predict it will likely be closer to the lower end of that range based on the dimensions of the Galaxy Z Flip 4.
There is currently no information available regarding any potential changes to the main foldable display. While a waterdrop hinge is expected to reduce the visibility of the crease, nothing has been confirmed yet. However, since this is Samsung we’re talking about, it is only a matter of time before more rumors and leaks surface, filling in the gaps of our knowledge of the Z Flip 5’s specs and features. So, stay tuned!
