Senior Jaguar Designer Departs JLR Weeks After New CEO Takes Charge

Gerry McGovern, the creative force behind modern Range Rovers and the bold redesign of Jaguar, has exited Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in a sudden move that comes only months after the company’s new chief executive took the helm.

McGovern, who served as JLR’s Chief Creative Officer, stepped down on Monday after a two-decade tenure that shaped some of the most recognisable vehicles in the company’s lineup. His portfolio included the flagship Range Rover, the popular Evoque, and Jaguar’s recent electric reboot — an unconventional design direction that sparked significant public debate, including criticism from former U.S. president Donald Trump.

Leadership Change Amid Turbulent Times

The departure follows the appointment of PB Balaji as JLR’s CEO in August. Balaji, formerly the CFO of Tata Motors — JLR’s parent company — was expected to lead a company that had returned to stable profitability for nearly three consecutive years.

However, his early months were overshadowed by a major cyber-attack in August that halted production across all JLR manufacturing plants, disrupting operations at a critical moment.

JLR has not issued an official statement regarding McGovern’s exit, and as of Wednesday, he remained listed on the company’s website. Autocar India, which first broke the story, reported that the decision took effect immediately.

Professor David Bailey of the University of Birmingham described the move as “shocking to the automotive sector,” suggesting it signals more than an internal reshuffle — possibly indicating a shift toward tighter oversight from Tata.

A Defining Career at Land Rover and Jaguar

McGovern rejoined Land Rover in 2004 after an earlier term and quickly rose to become the brand’s leading design authority. Under his leadership, the company delivered some of its most commercially successful vehicles, helping evolve the Range Rover line into a global luxury icon.

His tenure also included high-profile collaborations, such as hiring Victoria Beckham in 2010 as a creative consultant. Their partnership drew headlines once more in 2017 when McGovern publicly dismissed Beckham’s claim of designing a special-edition Evoque, emphasizing the depth of expertise required in automotive design.

In 2021, McGovern was promoted by then-CEO Thierry Bolloré to oversee creative direction across both Land Rover and the struggling Jaguar brand. Following the cancellation of Jaguar’s earlier electric vehicle program, McGovern was tasked with reinventing the brand from the ground up.

The Controversial Jaguar Reboot

His solution — an avant-garde electric model internally referred to as the Type 00 — represented a dramatic break from Jaguar’s traditional aesthetic. Angular, windowless at the rear, and initially presented in striking pink and electric blue, the design aimed to appeal to affluent, younger buyers across global markets rather than compete directly with German luxury sedans.

The campaign ignited intense reaction online, particularly after teaser visuals featuring gender-fluid models. Elon Musk and Donald Trump both criticized the promotional direction, with Trump labelling the advertisement “woke.” McGovern remained unapologetic, calling the creative approach “fearless.”

With McGovern’s departure, uncertainty now surrounds whether the production version will remain faithful to his vision. Prototypes, however, had reportedly progressed significantly before the cyber-attack stalled the company’s development schedule. One individual familiar with the vehicle described it as “impressive to drive.”

Future of the Electric Range Rover

Another key project under McGovern’s leadership — the first fully electric Range Rover — remains central to JLR’s transition away from diesel and petrol engines. While its exterior styling closely mirrors the current combustion model, market entry could be pushed back due to the production delays triggered by the cyber incident. JLR had initially planned to begin customer deliveries by year-end.

McGovern’s sudden departure marks a pivotal moment for the company, raising questions about the direction of its future design strategy under new leadership.
