Snapchat enhances Family Center with new parental tools, offering insights into teens’ screen time, app usage, and new friend connections.
Snapchat has introduced enhanced parental monitoring features that give parents and guardians greater visibility into how teenagers use the platform. The updates, rolled out through Snapchat’s Family Center, allow parents to track screen time patterns and gain clearer insights into new connections their teens make on the app.
With the latest update, parents can now view the average daily time their teen spends on Snapchat over the past week. The data is further segmented across key areas of the app, including messaging, snapping, camera creation, Snap Map usage, and content consumption through Stories and Spotlight. This breakdown is designed to help families better understand how time is distributed across different features rather than simply measuring total usage.
In addition to screen time transparency, Snapchat has strengthened visibility around new friends added by teens. While Family Center already provided access to a teen’s full friends list, parents can now see contextual indicators that explain how a new connection may have been established. These indicators include whether the user shares mutual friends, appears in the teen’s contacts, or belongs to the same community.
According to Snap, these added trust signals are intended to help parents better understand their teen’s online relationships and encourage open conversations when unfamiliar connections appear. The company emphasized that the goal is not surveillance, but informed engagement between parents and teens.
Family Center was first launched in 2022 as part of Snapchat’s response to increasing regulatory scrutiny around child safety and digital wellbeing. Since its introduction, the platform has steadily expanded the tool’s capabilities, adding features such as recent interaction visibility, customizable time limits, and the option to restrict access to Snapchat’s My AI chatbot.
The announcement comes at a sensitive time for the company, following the recent settlement of a lawsuit that accused Snapchat and other major social media platforms of contributing to addiction-driven design and negative mental health outcomes among young users. While the settlement resolved claims against Snap in this particular case, similar lawsuits involving other platforms—including Meta, YouTube, and TikTok—remain ongoing.
Snapchat continues to face broader legal and regulatory challenges related to youth safety. Internal company discussions from previous years, disclosed in ongoing cases, have highlighted long-standing concerns about teen mental health risks. Snap has maintained that these disclosures do not accurately represent the full context of its safety efforts.
With the latest Family Center enhancements, Snapchat appears to be reinforcing its commitment to parental involvement, transparency, and responsible platform use as scrutiny around social media’s impact on young users continues to intensify.
