Steve Jobs, Apple’s co-founder, wanted the original iPhone to have no SIM card slot. Steve was more interested in using CDMA to connect iPhones to cell towers instead of GSM cellular technology.
In a recent interview, former iPodVP Tony Fadell, also known as the “father of the iPod,” disclosed that Jobs was against the iPhone’s idea of having a SIM card slot. Jobs wanted to ditch the card slot. Steve wanted to ditch the card slot because of his device preferences.
“We don’t want another hole in it (iPhone),” Jobs told the engineers and designers working on the iPhone as per Fadell. He further informed that Jobs wanted to make the smartphone have a CDMA network rather than GSM to drop the card slot. For those who do not know, devices that support CDMA do not need a SIM card as they are directly attached to the service provider’s network.
Specified apparently in September 2022 deadline, Apple may dismiss the physical SIM card slot on some iPhone 14 models rather than some iPhone 15 models as rumored initially, but nothing is definitive.
Apple suggests eSIM functionality on its iPhones, but it is limited to a few countries. An iPhone with no physical SIM card is something Apple has been dreaming up for years, and it seems like the time is near when the company establishes the device without the actual SIM card tray. Rumour has it that the iPhone 15 Pro models might ship without a SIM card slot, paving the way for a SIM-free iPhone.

The previous week, a piece of recent information revealed that Apple is planning to ditch the Lightning port in the iPhone in favor of USB-C to comply with the European Commission’s proposal that a USB-C connector will become the standard port for all smartphones and tablets. Apple is predicted to introduce the iPhone 14 models at an event likely in September 2022 if Apple follows previous launch timelines.
