Ales Bialiatski and two organizations, the Memorial for Russian Human Rights and the Center for Civil Liberties for Ukrainian Human Rights, received the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize Friday at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo. Last year’s winners of the award for “their efforts to defend freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and sustainable peace” were the journalist Maria Ressa of the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia.
Monday marked the start of the Nobel Prize announcements, with Swedish scientist Svante Paabo winning the prize in medicine for his outstanding research on Neanderthal DNA. For their work in quantum physics, Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger received the prize on Tuesday.
The honorary prize in chemistry was handed on Wednesday to Morten Meldal, a Danish scientist, Carolyn R. Bertozzi, and K. Barry Sharpless, three Americans.
This year’s Nobel Prize in literature was awarded to French author Annie Ernaux on Thursday.
