WhatsApp rolls out custom group tags, text stickers, and event reminders, aiming to improve clarity, personalization, and coordination in group chats.
WhatsApp is rolling out a set of new features aimed at making group conversations more organized and expressive, particularly as the platform continues to expand beyond personal messaging into larger community-based interactions.
One of the key updates allows users to add custom tags within group chats, helping participants better understand each other’s roles. The feature is designed for situations where group members may share the same first name or are unfamiliar with one another, such as community groups, sports teams, or school parent circles. Users can now assign themselves a contextual label for each group—for example, identifying as “Anna’s Dad” in a school chat or “Goalkeeper” in a sports group.
WhatsApp said the update reflects how people increasingly move between different roles across multiple group conversations. In a blog post, the Meta-owned company noted that custom tags give users a simple way to add clarity and context without changing their overall profile.
Alongside group tags, WhatsApp is also introducing text stickers, allowing users to convert any typed word into a sticker using the Sticker Search function. This feature aims to make conversations more expressive and personalized without relying solely on pre-designed stickers.
Another addition is event reminders, which enable group members to set custom alerts ahead of scheduled activities such as parties, meetings, or group calls. The feature is expected to help improve coordination within active group chats.
WhatsApp has not shared a specific timeline for when the new features will be available, noting that updates are typically rolled out gradually based on users’ location and operating system.
The latest announcements come at a time when WhatsApp is facing increased scrutiny over its security practices. In late November, security researchers revealed a critical vulnerability that reportedly exposed the phone numbers of more than three billion users worldwide, raising concerns around data protection and platform safety.
