Why AI Governance Will Become the Next Mandatory Requirement for Every Enterprise by 2026

Artificial Intelligence is entering a phase of rapid adoption that resembles the early days of cloud transformation. The difference today is that AI impacts not just technology but decision making, customer interactions and organisational accountability. As enterprises across the world accelerate the use of AI in operations, risk management, customer insights and automation, the absence of structured governance has become a pressing challenge.

In the last few years, I have worked across multiple regulated environments in financial services and retail, and I have seen first hand how organisations often move faster on AI experimentation than on the controls that must support it. The introduction of new global AI standards has made this gap even more visible. Boards and senior leaders are beginning to realise that AI governance is no longer an optional strategic enhancement. It is becoming a fundamental requirement for business continuity, customer trust and regulatory compliance.

AI has shifted from innovation to enterprise risk

There was a time when AI was viewed as an emerging technology trend explored mainly by innovation teams. Today it is embedded in business processes, supply chains, customer experience functions and internal decision systems. This shift has elevated AI from a technical innovation to a clear enterprise risk domain.

Unlike traditional cybersecurity which focuses on securing systems, AI governance focuses on the integrity of decisions, the quality and lineage of data, the behaviour of automated models and the impact of AI on people and processes. Poorly governed AI can introduce new forms of bias, incorrect predictions, operational errors, data leakage and compliance violations. Even unintentional misuse of AI tools by business teams can create material risks ranging from inaccurate reporting to exposure of sensitive information.

Once executives understand that AI is influencing decisions that affect customers, markets and employees, the conversation moves away from innovation experiments and toward oversight and accountability.

Global regulators are establishing clear expectations

In 2023 and 2024, the regulatory landscape for AI began to evolve at a pace that mirrors the early development of cybersecurity and privacy laws. Regulators in the United Arab Emirates, the European Union, Singapore and several Asia Pacific regions have issued guidelines, frameworks and in some cases legally enforceable requirements for responsible AI use.

Frameworks such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and the new ISO 42001 AI Management System standard offer clear guidance for how organisations should structure responsibility across the AI lifecycle. The message from regulators is consistent. AI requires accountability, explainability, record keeping, risk assessments, model monitoring and human oversight.

This is very similar to how cybersecurity compliance matured. What started as voluntary adoption of standards eventually became mandatory through industry regulations. AI governance is now following the same path.

AI governance and Cybersecurity GRC must work together

Organisations often treat AI initiatives as separate from cybersecurity and risk management. This separation is becoming unsustainable. The future of enterprise risk requires a unified approach that brings AI risk, cybersecurity controls, privacy requirements and regulatory obligations into one governance structure.

Traditional GRC functions already manage policy development, risk assessments, internal controls, vendor assurance and audit readiness. These existing practices can be extended to cover new AI specific domains that include model transparency, model drift monitoring, data lineage tracking, validation of training datasets, responsible use policies and safe use training for employees.

When GRC teams and AI teams collaborate, organisations gain a holistic understanding of risk. This becomes essential as AI models take on more operational responsibilities.

Boards and executives will demand visibility and control

Board members now face new questions. They want to understand where AI is being used, who is accountable for model outcomes, how AI decisions are validated and what controls exist to prevent misuse.

AI governance provides the structure that offers confidence. With clear policies, defined roles, risk classifications, oversight committees and regular monitoring, executives can support AI innovation without compromising trust or compliance.

Enterprises that adopt AI governance early will gain the advantage of safe experimentation. Organisations that delay will find themselves responding reactively to incidents, regulatory pressure or reputational concerns.

A practical roadmap for organisations starting the journey

The path to AI governance does not need to be complex. Organisations can begin with a set of foundational steps that create clarity and structure. These include creation of an AI governance policy, formation of a cross functional oversight committee, completion of AI specific risk assessments, establishment of controls across the AI lifecycle and introduction of training for employees to ensure safe and responsible use.

Over time, organisations can extend these foundations to align with ISO 42001, NIST AI RMF and region specific regulatory requirements. Once these processes mature, enterprises are able to innovate with confidence while maintaining strong controls.

The future of digital trust

A few years ago, cybersecurity and privacy became core pillars of digital trust. Today AI governance has joined them. Trust will be the determining factor for organisations that operate in a digital economy. Enterprises that embed accountability, transparency and responsible decision making into their AI programs will stand out to stakeholders, customers and regulators.

The organisations that prepare now will be the ones that lead in the next decade. As someone who has worked across cybersecurity, GRC and now AI governance, I believe that integrated governance is the most important step forward for modern enterprises. AI will continue to evolve and its impact will grow significantly. Strong governance ensures that this evolution creates value rather than risk.
