US Scientists use Brain Scans and Artificial Intelligence to decode human thoughts

The world is quickly moving away from the accepted ways of dream interpretation in 2023. Artificial intelligence has made it possible to read people’s minds more effectively. A new development appeared on the horizon when it was revealed in March that researchers had used stable diffusion to generate high-resolution images from brain activity scans.

US researchers asserted they had developed a method for capturing the essence of the human mind using brain scans and artificial intelligence. Three participants spent 16 hours inside an fMRI scanner for the study, which allowed researchers to trace the neural pathways that words and meanings triggered in their brains. A GPT-1 AI model was fed this information to decipher the participants’ ideas.

A team of researchers from the University of Texas in Austin has created an artificial intelligence model to read your thoughts. The peer-reviewed work published in the journal Nature Neuroscience emphasizes how to translate brain activity into a stream of text using the noninvasive AI technology known as a semantic decoder.

Jerry Tang, a computer science doctorate candidate, and Alex Huth, an assistant professor of neurology and computer science at UT Austin, were in charge of the study. The transformer architecture that underlies Google Bard and OpenAI’s ChatGPT is a foundational component of Tang and Huth’s work.

Scientists are optimistic that their most recent invention will help those paralyzed or with some other sort of handicap. The recently created technology can transform brain activity into a text stream and is essentially an AI-based decoder. This means that for the first time in neuroscience or general medical science history, AI will now make it possible to read someone’s thoughts without physically touching them.

Three participants in the study were invited to listen to stories while they were placed in MRI machines. Scientists claim that they produced the text of the participants’ thoughts without using brain implants, which can be considered a huge breakthrough. It is important to emphasize that the mind-reading equipment only accurately captured their main ideas rather than their complete thoughts.

“Compared to previous work, which has often consisted of single words or brief sentences, this is a significant advancement for a noninvasive technology. We’re teaching the model to decode continuous language with complex ideas over long periods, according to Huth, quoted in a report on the UT Texas website.

Scientists claim that the AI system may produce a text stream when a participant listens to or imagines a story. The researchers claim this is feasible after the AI system has received the necessary training. Researchers used technology similar to ChatGPT to decipher people’s thoughts as they watched silent movies or pretended to be narrating a story. The latest study has also raised concerns concerning the privacy of the mind.

In addition to Tang and Huth, the study’s co-authors include Shailee Jain, a UT Austin graduate in computer science, and Amanda LeBel, a former research assistant at the Huth Lab.
