Lorenza Maggio

Lufthansa Group appoints seasoned aviation executive Lorenza Maggio to lead Brussels Airlines and strengthen European operations

Brussels Airlines is set for a new chapter in its leadership journey as the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG has appointed Lorenza Maggio as the airline’s next Chief Executive Officer. The appointment, which remains subject to approval by the Board of Directors of SN Airholding, marks a significant leadership transition for Belgium’s national carrier and a key member of the Lufthansa Group.

Maggio will succeed Dorothea von Boxberg, who has decided to leave the company at her own request effective August 31, 2026. In addition to leading Brussels Airlines, Maggio will also take on the strategic role of Executive Board Representative to the European Commission, highlighting the growing importance of regulatory engagement and cross-border collaboration within the European aviation sector.

Lufthansa Group Bets on Internal Talent for Brussels Airlines Leadership

The appointment reflects Lufthansa Group’s commitment to nurturing leadership from within its organization. Lorenza Maggio brings nearly two decades of experience across multiple aviation and travel-related businesses, making her one of the most experienced executives within the group.

Commenting on the appointment, Dieter Vranckx, Chairman of the Board of Directors of SN Airholding and Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group, praised Maggio’s extensive industry expertise and international leadership background.

He emphasized that her experience across various Lufthansa Group companies and leadership roles positions her well to guide Brussels Airlines through its next phase of growth while strengthening its role as an integrated hub airline within the group’s European network.

Vranckx also expressed gratitude to outgoing CEO Dorothea von Boxberg for her years of service and contributions to the Lufthansa Group.

Who Is Lorenza Maggio?

At 48, Lorenza Maggio has built an impressive career across strategy, sales, customer experience, and airline integration.

Since January 2025, she has served on the Board of Directors of ITA Airways as Chief Strategy and Integration Officer. In that role, she has been responsible for steering the Italian carrier’s integration into the Lufthansa Group while shaping its long-term strategic direction.

Before joining ITA Airways’ leadership team, Maggio held the position of Vice President Sales for Lufthansa Group’s network airlines. She managed commercial operations across Europe (outside home markets), the Middle East, and Africa, giving her extensive experience in international aviation markets and customer engagement strategies.

Her career also includes leadership roles at Eurowings, where she oversaw brand and customer strategy initiatives, as well as a managing director position within a subsidiary of the LSG Group, Lufthansa’s aviation services business.

Strategic Importance for Brussels Airlines

Maggio’s appointment comes at a crucial time for Brussels Airlines and the broader European aviation industry. Airlines across the continent continue to focus on network optimization, sustainability goals, digital transformation, and operational efficiency while navigating changing passenger expectations.

With her background in strategy, integration, and commercial operations, industry observers believe Maggio is well-positioned to help Brussels Airlines strengthen its competitive position while deepening its alignment with Lufthansa Group’s broader European growth strategy.

Her experience in integrating ITA Airways into Lufthansa’s ecosystem could also prove valuable as airline groups increasingly seek greater operational synergies and customer-focused innovation across their networks.

What Comes Next?

The exact timeline for Maggio’s move from Rome to Brussels is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks. Once approved by SN Airholding’s Board of Directors, she will officially take over leadership of Brussels Airlines and begin overseeing one of Europe’s most important aviation hubs.

As Brussels Airlines prepares for a new era, the appointment signals Lufthansa Group’s confidence in experienced internal leadership to drive growth, strengthen European connectivity, and navigate the evolving aviation landscape.
