NASA has been monitoring the path of Asteroid 2023 FS11, which is expected to come close to Earth on April 3. The asteroid’s size, measuring 82 feet in width and similar to that of an aircraft, is a cause for concern. Although NASA predicts no impact, any deviation in its course could result in a collision.
In response to the threat posed by potential asteroid impacts, NASA has conducted a successful test of the DART Mission, which involved redirecting an oncoming asteroid. The European Space Agency (ESA) is now preparing to launch the NEOMIR (Near-Earth Object Mission in the InfraRed) spacecraft, which will be stationed at the L1 Lagrange Point, between the Sun and Earth, and will detect asteroids of 20 meters or larger that are invisible from Earth. NEOMIR will serve as an early warning system for potentially dangerous asteroids.
Asteroid 2023 FS11 is currently a topic of interest among various space agencies worldwide as it is expected to make a close approach with Earth today. It is uncommon for larger asteroids to make such close approaches, unlike smaller asteroids that do so frequently. Furthermore, most asteroids that approach Earth disintegrate in the atmosphere.
