Dr. Richard Munang Named Director of UNU-INRA to Advance Africa’s Sustainable Development Goals

Dr. Munang

The United Nations University (UNU) has announced the appointment of Dr. Richard Munang as the next Director of the United Nations University Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA), marking a significant leadership transition for one of Africa’s leading institutions focused on sustainable natural resource management. Dr. Munang is set to officially assume the role on 14 September 2026 at the institute’s headquarters in Accra, Ghana.

His appointment comes at a time when African nations are increasingly seeking science-backed solutions to address climate challenges, resource governance, environmental sustainability, and inclusive economic growth.

A Globally Recognized Sustainability Expert Takes the Helm

A citizen of Cameroon, Dr. Munang has built an international reputation as a leading expert in sustainability, climate resilience, systems transformation, and natural resource governance. With nearly 20 years of experience spanning Africa and the broader Global South, he has played a pivotal role in shaping policies and programs related to climate adaptation, environmental monitoring, food and water security, clean energy, and environmental crime prevention.

Throughout his professional journey, Dr. Munang has consistently focused on translating scientific research into practical action. His work has helped governments, institutions, and development organizations develop policies, financing mechanisms, standards, and implementation frameworks designed to drive sustainable development while protecting natural ecosystems.

Extensive Leadership Experience Across the United Nations System

Before joining UNU-INRA, Dr. Munang served as the Head of the Global Programme on Crimes that Affect the Environment at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). In that position, he led international efforts to combat illegal mining, wildlife trafficking, illegal logging, illegal fishing, and hazardous waste crimes.

His leadership strengthened the use of environmental intelligence and enforcement data to support investigations, prosecutions, and policy decisions, helping countries better protect critical natural resources and improve environmental governance.

Prior to his role at UNODC, Dr. Munang held several senior positions within the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). As Head of the Global Environment Monitoring Systems, he worked to improve the integration of real-time environmental data across air, water, and ocean ecosystems while enhancing information-sharing capabilities for member states worldwide.

He also served as Deputy Regional Director of UNEP’s Regional Office for Africa, overseeing initiatives across all 54 African countries, and previously led continental programs as UNEP’s Africa Regional Climate Change Coordinator, focusing on climate adaptation, renewable energy, innovative financing, and food security.

UNU Leadership Welcomes the Appointment

Welcoming the appointment, Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala, Rector of the United Nations University and United Nations Under-Secretary-General, highlighted Dr. Munang’s unique blend of academic excellence and practical implementation experience.

According to Prof. Marwala, Dr. Munang brings a rare combination of scholarship, program leadership, and on-the-ground execution, making him exceptionally well-positioned to help UNU-INRA expand its impact, partnerships, and research influence across Africa and the Global South.

The appointment reflects UNU’s commitment to strengthening knowledge-driven development strategies that connect scientific evidence with effective policymaking.

Driving Climate Innovation and Youth Empowerment Across Africa

Over the years, Dr. Munang has contributed to several influential initiatives that have shaped Africa’s climate and sustainability agenda.

Among his notable achievements is his contribution to the first Africa Adaptation Gap Report, which played a key role in elevating climate adaptation as a central priority in African climate negotiations alongside mitigation efforts.

He has also championed climate entrepreneurship programs at African universities and helped develop innovative, volunteer-driven models that equip young people with the skills to participate in climate-related enterprises. These initiatives have engaged millions of African youth while promoting sustainable economic opportunities.

Accomplished Scholar and Global Thought Leader

Beyond his United Nations responsibilities, Dr. Munang serves as an Adjunct Research Professor at Western University in Canada, where his academic work focuses on climate resilience, environmental risk management, planetary health, and data-driven decision-making.

His scholarly contributions include more than 100 publications spanning peer-reviewed research papers, books, and academic chapters. His work has earned widespread recognition, including honors such as the Top 50 Global Thought Leaders in Sustainability, Top 100 Africa and Middle East Sustainability Voices, the Your Nottingham Alumni Award, UNEP’s Baobab Award for Programme Innovation, and the Africa Environmental Hero Award from the International Environmental Roundtable.

Dr. Munang holds a PhD in Environmental Change and Policy from the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom and an Executive Certificate in Climate Change and Energy Policymaking for the Long Term from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Vision for UNU-INRA’s Future

Commenting on his appointment, Dr. Munang expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead UNU-INRA and emphasized the strategic importance of Africa’s natural resources in shaping the continent’s future.

He noted that the growing demand for African-led scientific research, connected directly to policy and implementation, presents an important opportunity for the institute. Under his leadership, UNU-INRA aims to strengthen its role as a trusted source of evidence-based insights that help African nations transform natural resource wealth into sustainable and inclusive development outcomes.

As Dr. Munang prepares to take office in September 2026, stakeholders across academia, government, and international development circles will be watching closely as UNU-INRA enters a new chapter focused on advancing sustainability, climate resilience, and responsible natural resource governance across Africa.
