In a landmark move that cements India’s position as a global technology powerhouse, Google has announced a $15 billion (approx. ₹1.34 lakh crore) investment in the country over the next five years (2026–2030). The announcement was made during the ‘Bharat AI Shakti’ event held in New Delhi on October 14, 2025, marking one of the largest foreign direct investments by a tech giant in India’s digital ecosystem.

The event, hosted by Google, was attended by key dignitaries including IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian. The announcement follows a series of high-level meetings between Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the two leaders discussed the roadmap for building a robust AI infrastructure in India.

Visakhapatnam to Host India’s First Google AI Hub

The centerpiece of Google’s massive investment is the establishment of India’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This cutting-edge facility will be the company’s largest AI center outside the United States, underscoring India’s strategic importance in the global AI landscape.

The Google AI Hub will not only serve as a world-class research and innovation facility but also house a purpose-built data center campus. This data center will provide gigawatt-scale compute capacity, enabling faster, more efficient processing to meet the surging demand for digital services across India and worldwide.

According to Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, “The Google AI Hub in Visakhapatnam represents a landmark investment in India’s digital future. By delivering industry-leading AI infrastructure at scale, we are enabling businesses to innovate faster and creating meaningful opportunities for inclusive growth. This partnership reflects our shared commitment with both the Indian and US governments to harness AI responsibly and drive transformative impact for society.”

Strengthening Global Connectivity from India’s Eastern Coast

The AI Hub will also play a pivotal role in enhancing global digital connectivity. Google announced that the new facility will integrate with multiple international subsea cable systems landing in Visakhapatnam, forming a crucial part of the company’s global network of over two million miles of terrestrial and subsea cables.

This integration will position Visakhapatnam as a key AI and connectivity hub for both India and the global market. The move aligns with Google’s broader mission to democratize access to high-performance computing and advanced AI capabilities across industries—from manufacturing and logistics to healthcare and education.

Collaboration with Indian Partners: AdaniConneX and Airtel

To ensure seamless implementation and infrastructure development, Google has partnered with AdaniConneX and Airtel, two major players in India’s data center and telecommunications sectors. The collaboration will leverage their local expertise and infrastructure strength to build the AI Hub using the same next-generation technology that powers Google products like Search, YouTube, and Workspace.

This strategic partnership also supports India’s growing emphasis on data sovereignty. By setting up large-scale data storage and compute facilities within the country, Google will adhere to India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act), ensuring that Indian consumer data remains stored and processed locally.

Boost to India’s AI and Digital Ecosystem

Once operational, the Visakhapatnam AI Hub will join Google’s global network of AI data centers spanning 12 countries, integrating the best of India’s engineering talent and R&D capabilities. The hub will draw on innovations from Google’s existing research centers in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune, further strengthening India’s position as an AI innovation leader.

This large-scale investment is expected to create thousands of jobs—from AI researchers and engineers to data scientists and infrastructure specialists. It will also accelerate AI-driven advancements in key sectors like agriculture, healthcare, fintech, and education, aligning with India’s “Digital India” and “Make AI in India” initiatives.

Sundar Pichai’s Vision for India’s AI Future

Ahead of the official announcement, Sundar Pichai emphasized India’s crucial role in shaping the next wave of global AI transformation. He noted that the Visakhapatnam AI Hub will bring state-of-the-art AI tools and research capabilities to Indian enterprises, enabling them to innovate at scale and compete globally.

“Our mission is to make AI accessible, useful, and responsible for everyone. With this new AI Hub, we’re creating an environment where Indian talent can build world-class solutions that benefit not just India, but the world,” Pichai said.

A Milestone Moment for India’s Digital Era

Google’s $15 billion investment is more than just a financial commitment—it represents a strategic bet on India’s AI-driven future. As the world moves toward a data-powered economy, this initiative could position India as a global leader in AI research, development, and deployment.

With its combination of talent, policy support, and infrastructure readiness, India stands at the threshold of becoming the next major hub for responsible and scalable AI innovation. The Google AI Hub in Visakhapatnam is poised to play a defining role in realizing that vision—bringing together technology, talent, and transformative impact for decades to come.
