OpenAI and Broadcom Introduce “Jalapeño” AI Chip to Power the Future of Large Language Models

Jalapeño

New Custom Accelerator Marks OpenAI’s Bold Expansion into AI Hardware Infrastructure

In a major milestone for the artificial intelligence industry, OpenAI and Broadcom have unveiled Jalapeño, a next-generation AI inference processor specifically engineered for large language models (LLMs). The announcement signals OpenAI’s growing ambition to control more of the AI technology stack—from groundbreaking models and products to the hardware that powers them.

The newly introduced accelerator is the first product in a multi-generation computing platform being jointly developed by OpenAI and Broadcom. Designed specifically for AI inference workloads, Jalapeño aims to make advanced AI systems faster, more efficient, and significantly more affordable at scale.

A Custom-Built Chip Designed for the AI Era

Unlike traditional AI accelerators adapted from earlier computing architectures, Jalapeño was created from the ground up to meet the unique requirements of modern LLMs. The chip has been optimized around the real-world demands of AI services such as ChatGPT, Codex, APIs, and future agentic AI systems.

OpenAI’s hardware team leveraged years of experience operating some of the world’s most advanced AI models to design a processor capable of handling the complex memory, networking, and computational requirements of next-generation AI applications.

Engineering samples are already running production-level machine learning workloads, including OpenAI’s GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark model, demonstrating the chip’s readiness for large-scale deployment.

Early Results Show Significant Efficiency Gains

Although comprehensive benchmark results are expected later this year, OpenAI reports that preliminary testing indicates Jalapeño delivers substantially better performance-per-watt compared to today’s leading AI accelerators.

The architecture minimizes data movement between components while intelligently balancing memory, compute resources, and networking bandwidth. This allows the system to operate much closer to its theoretical maximum performance—a critical factor for large-scale AI deployments where efficiency directly impacts operational costs.

Broadcom’s advanced silicon engineering capabilities, combined with its Tomahawk networking technology, play a crucial role in enabling the processor to scale efficiently across massive data center environments.

OpenAI’s Vision: Building the Entire AI Stack

The launch of Jalapeño reflects OpenAI’s broader strategy of becoming a full-stack AI company.

According to OpenAI President and Co-Founder Greg Brockman, the world is increasingly becoming a compute-driven economy where access to efficient processing power determines the pace of AI innovation. By developing its own hardware infrastructure, OpenAI aims to improve performance, reliability, and affordability while expanding access to advanced AI technologies.

This approach enables tighter integration between hardware, software, models, networking systems, deployment infrastructure, and user-facing products. The result is a unified ecosystem optimized to deliver AI capabilities more efficiently than ever before.

Record-Breaking Development Cycle

One of the most remarkable aspects of the project is its speed.

OpenAI and Broadcom revealed that Jalapeño progressed from initial design to manufacturing tape-out in just nine months—what the companies believe could be the fastest ASIC development cycle ever achieved for a high-performance semiconductor.

The accelerated timeline was made possible through close collaboration between OpenAI engineers, Broadcom’s chip design specialists, and the use of OpenAI’s own AI models throughout portions of the development process.

In a notable example of AI helping advance AI infrastructure, OpenAI’s models were used to assist engineers in design optimization and hardware development workflows, potentially setting a new standard for semiconductor innovation.

Preparing for Gigawatt-Scale AI Infrastructure

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan emphasized that Jalapeño represents only the beginning of a long-term roadmap.

The companies are planning deployments across gigawatt-scale AI data centers beginning in 2026, working alongside major infrastructure partners, including Microsoft and others. Future generations of the platform will continue to build on the foundation established by Jalapeño, expanding AI compute capacity to support increasingly sophisticated models.

The broader ecosystem also includes hardware manufacturing and system integration support from Celestica, which contributes expertise in boards, racks, and large-scale computing systems.

Why Jalapeño Matters

As AI adoption accelerates worldwide, inference; the process of generating responses and performing tasks using trained models has become one of the industry’s most critical challenges.

Every improvement in inference efficiency translates directly into faster ChatGPT responses, more capable AI assistants, lower API costs, improved reliability, and better user experiences.

With Jalapeño, OpenAI is betting that custom-designed AI hardware will become a key competitive advantage in the race to scale artificial intelligence globally. By reducing compute costs and increasing performance, the company hopes to bring powerful AI capabilities to more students, developers, researchers, enterprises, and businesses worldwide.

Outlook

The unveiling of Jalapeño marks a pivotal moment in OpenAI’s evolution from an AI model developer into a comprehensive AI infrastructure company. As the demand for AI computing power continues to surge, OpenAI and Broadcom’s collaboration could reshape how future AI systems are built, deployed, and scaled; bringing the vision of more accessible and affordable intelligence closer to reality.
