OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have unveiled five new U.S.-based data center sites under Stargate, OpenAI’s ambitious AI infrastructure initiative, marking a major leap toward achieving their historic $500 billion, 10-gigawatt commitment by the end of 2025. With this announcement, Stargate now stands at nearly 7 gigawatts of planned capacity and more than $400 billion in investments, putting the project ahead of schedule.
New Data Centers Powering AI Growth Across the U.S.
The five new sites are built on OpenAI’s flagship facility in Abilene, Texas, and ongoing collaborations with CoreWeave. The latest expansion includes three Oracle-developed sites in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and an upcoming Midwest location, alongside an additional 600-megawatt expansion near Abilene. Collectively, these Oracle-led projects will contribute more than 5.5 gigawatts of AI compute capacity.
Meanwhile, SoftBank is spearheading two additional Stargate sites with the potential to scale up to 1.5 gigawatts within the next 18 months. These include a new facility in Lordstown, Ohio, designed with advanced, high-efficiency infrastructure, and another in Milam County, Texas, developed with SB Energy, SoftBank’s renewable energy subsidiary. Together, the five sites are expected to create more than 25,000 onsite jobs and tens of thousands of indirect employment opportunities nationwide.
A Nationwide Effort with Global Impact
Launched in January 2025, Stargate has attracted over 300 proposals from 30+ states, highlighting the competitive race among U.S. regions to host cutting-edge AI infrastructure. Today’s five-site announcement represents the first wave of selections, with additional sites planned as the initiative surpasses its $500 billion commitment.
Oracle is already delivering critical infrastructure for OpenAI’s AI research. In June, Oracle began installing the NVIDIA GB200 racks at Abilene, enabling early training and inference workloads for OpenAI’s next-generation models on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI).
Leaders Speak on AI’s Future
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the importance of compute power in driving AI progress: “AI can only fulfill its promise if we build the compute to power it. That compute is the key to ensuring everyone can benefit from AI and to unlocking future breakthroughs.”
Clay Magouyrk, CEO of Oracle, highlighted the rapid growth in demand: “Oracle’s reliable, scalable, and secure AI infrastructure is helping OpenAI rapidly scale its business. We continue to expand OCI’s footprint at an unrivaled pace to deliver the most performant and cost-effective AI training and inferencing.”
SoftBank Chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son added: “Stargate is harnessing SoftBank’s innovative data center design and energy expertise to deliver the scalable compute that powers AI’s future. Together with OpenAI, Arm, and our Stargate partners, we are paving the way for a new era where AI advances humanity.”
A National Priority with Global Stakes
Stargate was originally introduced in January at the White House alongside President Trump, as part of a wider strategy to bolster American AI infrastructure. Backed by pro-innovation policies, the initiative has moved faster than expected, attracting global investment and establishing the U.S. as the center of large-scale AI compute capacity.
With Oracle, SoftBank, and a growing list of partners, OpenAI is turning a once-ambitious vision into reality—delivering multi-gigawatt data centers, generating thousands of U.S. jobs, and laying the groundwork for the next era of AI breakthroughs.
