In a bold move to expand its footprint in one of its fastest-growing markets, OpenAI has announced that it will offer its ChatGPT Go plan free of charge for one year to all users in India who sign up during a limited promotional period beginning November 4. The initiative underscores OpenAI’s strategic focus on India, a nation rapidly emerging as a global hub for AI adoption and digital innovation.
Strengthening Ties with India’s Booming AI Ecosystem
The U.S.-based AI powerhouse revealed the announcement on Tuesday, emphasizing that even existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India will be eligible for the 12-month complimentary extension. However, the company has yet to confirm the duration of this limited-time offer.
Originally priced at under $5 per month, the ChatGPT Go plan was first introduced in India in August 2025 as the company’s most affordable subscription tier, aimed at making premium AI capabilities more accessible to a wider audience. Following its successful Indian debut, OpenAI expanded the plan to Indonesia and later to 16 additional countries across Asia, signaling its commitment to regional growth.
India’s digital landscape, with over 700 million smartphone users and more than a billion internet subscribers, offers fertile ground for OpenAI’s expansion. The company opened its first Indian office in New Delhi earlier this year and continues to assemble a local team to bolster its operations.
OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman, previously identified India as the company’s second-largest market after the United States. Yet, monetization has remained a challenge: despite 29 million downloads in 90 days leading up to August, the ChatGPT app generated only $3.6 million in in-app purchases, according to data from Appfigures reviewed by TechCrunch.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Go offers a significant upgrade from the free version, boasting 10 times higher usage limits for generating text, images, and documents. The move also comes as OpenAI faces intensifying competition in India’s AI landscape. Rivals such as Perplexity and Google are actively pursuing similar strategies to capture the country’s vast and youthful digital audience.
Recently, Perplexity partnered with telecom giant Airtel to offer free Perplexity Pro subscriptions to its 360 million subscribers, while Google rolled out a one-year free AI Pro plan for students in India, underscoring the fierce race to win over the next generation of AI users.

As part of its engagement strategy, OpenAI will host its DevDay Exchange developer conference in Bengaluru on November 4, where it is expected to announce India-specific partnerships, tools, and initiatives tailored for local developers, educators, and enterprises.
