Strategic Partnership Marks a New Era for India’s AI Infrastructure and Renewable Energy Future
In a landmark move that underscores India’s growing importance in the global artificial intelligence ecosystem, Meta and Reliance Industries have announced a major expansion of their strategic partnership with plans to establish Meta’s first AI-enabled data center in India.
The state-of-the-art facility will be located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, and is expected to become a critical hub for powering Meta’s next-generation AI technologies, digital services, and long-term vision of personal superintelligence. The announcement signals one of Meta’s most significant infrastructure investments in India and further strengthens the technology giant’s commitment to one of its largest and fastest-growing user communities worldwide.
A Major Boost for India’s AI Ambitions
Under the agreement, Reliance Industries will build a dedicated AI-enabled data center with an initial capacity of 168 megawatts (MW), which Meta will lease with options for future expansion as demand grows.
The facility is designed to provide world-class computing power capable of supporting advanced AI workloads, enabling Meta to bring its infrastructure closer to Indian users while improving speed, performance, and service quality across its platforms.
Speaking about the partnership, Mark Zuckerberg emphasized the project’s strategic importance.
“We’re proud to be working with Reliance to build our first AI-enabled data center in India. This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India’s economy.”
The project reflects Meta’s broader strategy of expanding its global infrastructure footprint to support rapidly growing AI demands while strengthening its presence in key digital markets.
Why India and Why Jamnagar?

Jamnagar has been selected as the location for the facility due to its unique advantages. Reliance is currently developing what is expected to be one of the largest data center campuses globally in the region, offering access to significant energy resources needed to support advanced AI infrastructure.
The data center will be powered entirely by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater, making sustainability a central component of the project. Meta has committed to covering the full cost of the energy and water resources required to operate the facility.
The infrastructure will also complement Meta’s broader connectivity investments, including Project Waterworth, the company’s ambitious subsea cable initiative designed to enhance global digital connectivity and improve access to high-speed internet services.
Building on a Long-Standing Relationship
The latest agreement represents another milestone in the evolving relationship between Meta and Reliance.
Their collaboration dates back to 2020 when Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, a move that accelerated digital connectivity and helped empower millions of Indian businesses and consumers.
Over the years, the partnership has expanded into areas such as digital commerce, connectivity, and AI innovation. More recently, the companies have collaborated to bring Meta’s open-source AI models to Indian enterprises and developers, helping accelerate AI adoption across industries.

He further highlighted Reliance’s ambition to create world-class infrastructure capable of driving AI innovation not only in India but across global markets.
Nearly 1 Gigawatt of Renewable Energy to Support Growth
Alongside the data center announcement, Meta revealed significant new investments in India’s clean energy sector, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable infrastructure development.
The company has secured agreements for nearly one gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy through partnerships with leading clean-energy providers.
One of the largest commitments comes through CleanMax, which will develop 837 MW of new solar and wind projects across Rajasthan and Karnataka. With this addition, Meta’s cumulative announced renewable energy capacity with CleanMax now exceeds 900 MW.
Meta has also partnered with Fourth Partner Energy to support 88 MW of new solar and wind projects spanning Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.
Combined with Reliance’s renewable energy support for the Jamnagar facility, these initiatives are expected to significantly contribute to India’s clean-energy ecosystem while helping Meta reduce emissions across its value chain.
