IIT Madras-founded startup Blurgs AI is charting a new course for the future of maritime intelligence after securing $2.2 million in fresh funding to expand its technology portfolio and strengthen its presence across global markets.
The funding round was led by Pravega Ventures and Shastra VC, with participation from prominent angel investors Suraj Nalin, Co-founder of PlaySimple Games, and Yashwanth Madhusudhan, Co-founder of Fyle.
Founded by Roshan Raj Mohanty and Avinash Kori, both alumni of IIT Madras, Blurgs AI has emerged as a key player in the maritime and defence technology space, delivering AI-powered operational intelligence solutions to organizations where real-time decision-making is critical.
Funding to Drive Expansion Beyond Defence
While the company has built a strong reputation through its work with India’s defence ecosystem, the new capital will help Blurgs AI broaden its focus into commercial maritime sectors, including ports, shipyards, fisheries, and related industries.
According to co-founder Roshan Raj Mohanty, the company plans to leverage the investment to scale solutions that improve operational efficiency across maritime infrastructure while also expanding its international footprint.
The startup is targeting strategic markets in West Asia and Southeast Asia, regions that play a pivotal role in global trade and shipping networks. Blurgs AI has already established a presence in international markets, serving clients in locations such as Dubai and Indonesia.
Building Smarter Ports and Sustainable Fisheries
At the core of Blurgs AI‘s mission is the use of artificial intelligence to improve operational efficiency and decision-making across maritime ecosystems.
For ports, the company’s technology is designed to enhance productivity by helping facilities manage higher vessel traffic without requiring significant infrastructure expansion. Through real-time intelligence and operational insights, ports can optimize resource utilization and streamline operations.
In the fisheries sector, Blurgs AI is focused on promoting safer and more sustainable fishing practices. Its solutions help fishermen navigate regulatory requirements, improve safety at sea, and strengthen financial sustainability.
The company is already collaborating with major maritime stakeholders, including Mumbai Port and VOC Port in India, while also supporting fisheries-related initiatives with the Indonesian government.
Trusted by Defence and Maritime Leaders
Blurgs AI’s technology platforms are currently deployed across a range of mission-critical organizations spanning defence, maritime operations, conservation, and government sectors.
Its customer portfolio includes prestigious institutions such as the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, Bharat Electronics, DRDO Labs, Mumbai Port Authority, Dubai Maritime City, and The Nature Conservancy Group.
On the commercial side, the company’s AI-powered platforms provide operational intelligence for ports, fleets, shipyards, and fisheries by delivering real-time visibility, performance optimization, and regulatory compliance support.
For defence and national security applications, the same technological framework enables advanced threat detection, adversary monitoring, and continuous situational awareness across multiple operational domains.
Team Expansion Plans Underway
As part of its next growth phase, Blurgs AI is also preparing for a significant workforce expansion.
The company currently employs around 40 professionals and plans to add approximately 30 new team members in the coming months as it scales operations and enters new markets.
Founded in late 2020 and operational since 2023, Blurgs AI has achieved profitability while remaining bootstrapped until now. The latest investment marks the startup’s first external funding round, highlighting investor confidence in its growth trajectory and technological capabilities.
Investors See Huge Potential in Maritime Intelligence
Investors backing the company believe maritime intelligence is becoming increasingly important amid changing geopolitical dynamics, growing global trade volumes, and climate-related challenges.
Pravega Ventures noted that India’s coastline represents a critical strategic asset, and technologies that improve maritime awareness and operational resilience will play an increasingly vital role in the future.
Shastra VC echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that while maritime infrastructure is becoming more digital, the real challenge lies in converting vast amounts of operational and sensor data into actionable intelligence. According to the firm, Blurgs AI is building the intelligence layer that enables organizations to make faster, smarter decisions in high-stakes environments.
A New Growth Chapter for Blurgs AI
With fresh capital, a growing customer base, and expansion plans spanning key global trade corridors, Blurgs AI is positioning itself at the intersection of artificial intelligence, maritime operations, and national security.
As ports, fisheries, shipyards, and defence organizations increasingly seek intelligent, data-driven decision-making tools, the startup’s latest funding milestone could mark the beginning of a significant new chapter in its journey toward becoming a global maritime AI leader.
